Mozilla's long-running project to bring multi-process architecture to hundreds of millions of Firefox users has finally met release criteria for a full-scale rollout. Nearly every other browser on the market has adopted multi-process architecture, splitting tabs and extensions into separate processes.


B of A's Bessant on AI, Blockchain, Patents and Swift

Cathy Bessant, the chief operations and technology officer of Bank of America, says banks shouldn't see themselves as fintech companies. They use technology, for sure, but they are not pure fintech in her view for one major reason: Their customers have much higher expectations of reliability. Fintech can be experimental, and it can fail without making much of a difference. Bank of America has no such luxury. "The potential cost of failure at scale is something to be avoided," Bessant said Tuesday during a session at the Exponential Finance conference hosted by Singularity University and CNBC. Banks can still be innovative, she said, pointing out that "not all wine that is great is made in Napa."

What you might not realize, however, is just how fast the SEO industry is changing because of it. A screenplay written by artificial intelligence has been made into a film

Three actors in glittery metallic costumes stand in an office, spouting gibberish at one another: the outcome of an experiment that couldn't be any more predictable. Earlier this week, UK filmmaker Oscar Sharp released Sunspring, an experimental film based on a screenplay developed by an artificial intelligence. The project saw Mr Sharp and technologist Ross Goodwin feeding an artificial long short-term memory neural network (LSTM) an array of science fiction film scripts. Mr Sharp and Mr Goodwin then programmed the LSTM to process the scripts, using cinematic writing conventions to produce a screenplay of its own. Mr Sharp then spent 48 hours developing the script into a film, before releasing it on the Ars Technica Videos YouTube page on June 9.

A few weeks ago, I attended the Seven Pines Symposium on Fundamental Problems in Physics outside Minneapolis, where I had the honor of participating in a panel discussion with Sir Roger Penrose. The way it worked was, Penrose spoke for a half hour about his ideas about consciousness (Gödel, quantum gravity, microtubules, uncomputability, you know the drill), then I delivered a half-hour "response," and then there was an hour of questions and discussion from the floor. Below, I'm sharing the prepared notes for my talk, as well as some very brief recollections about the discussion afterward. I unfortunately don't have the text or transparencies for Penrose's talk available to me, but--with one exception, which I touch on in my own talk--his talk very much followed the outlines of his famous books, The Emperor's New Mind and Shadows of the Mind. Admittedly, for regular readers of this blog, not much in my own talk will be new either. Apart from a few new wisecracks, almost all of the material (including the replies to Penrose) is contained in The Ghost in the Quantum Turing Machine, Could A Quantum Computer Have Subjective Experience? (my talk at IBM T. J. Watson), and Quantum Computing Since Democritus chapters 4 and 11. See also my recent answer on Quora to "What's your take on John Searle's Chinese room argument"? Still, I thought it might be of interest to some readers how I organized this material for the specific, unenviable task of debating the guy who proved that our universe contains spacetime singularities. The Seven Pines Symposium was the first time I had extended conversations with Penrose (I'd talked to him only briefly before, at the Perimeter Institute). At age 84, Penrose's sight is failing him; he eagerly demonstrated the complicated optical equipment he was recently issued by Britain's National Health Service. But his mind remains … well, may we all aspire to be a milliPenrose or even a nanoPenrose when we're 84 years old.

The question of which values should be introduced into the guidance systems of driverless cars has implications well beyond the ethical directions to be granted to these new vehicles. Namely, such guidance is needed for a great variety of robots, machines, and instruments (instruments, from here on) that are already equipped with artificial intelligence (AI)--and many more in the near future (The Economist 2015). These instruments are often referred to as "smart." As Ed Lazowska of the University of Washington put it, "During the next decade we're going to see smarts put into everything. According to Francesca Rossi, a computer scientist at the University of Padova, "Until now, the emphasis has been on making machines faster and more precise--better able to reach a specific goal set by humans.


How a student's death highlighted our reliance on companies for health advice

China's equivalent of Google is under fire. Search engine Baidu has been criticised following the death of 21-year-old student Wei Zai, who used the search engine to research esoteric treatments for his cancer. After Wei Zai's death, the state-run People's Daily attacked Baidu, claiming it was ranking search results in exchange for money. "There have been hospitals making profits at the cost of killing patients who were directed by false advertisements paid at a higher rank in search results," the article claimed, adding, "profit considerations shall not be placed over social responsibility". The Chinese party newspaper may have its own reasons for wanting to control Baidu; a powerful search engine is a gateway to the outside world and a challenge to any repressive state.


Nick Bostrom: 'We are like small children playing with a bomb'

You'll find the Future of Humanity Institute down a medieval backstreet in the centre of Oxford. It is beside St Ebbe's church, which has stood on this site since 1005, and above a Pure Gym, which opened in April. The institute, a research faculty of Oxford University, was established a decade ago to ask the very biggest questions on our behalf. Notably: what exactly are the "existential risks" that threaten the future of our species; how do we measure them; and what can we do to prevent them? Or to put it another way: in a world of multiple fears, what precisely should we be most terrified of? When I arrive to meet the director of the institute, Professor Nick Bostrom, a bed is being delivered to the second-floor office. Existential risk is a round-the-clock kind of operation; it sleeps fitfully, if at all. Bostrom, a 43-year-old Swedish-born philosopher, has lately acquired something of the status of prophet of doom among those currently doing most to shape our civilisation: the tech billionaires of Silicon Valley.


Apple to make Siri smarter

But as its competitors jockey to build intelligent "chat bots" and voice-controlled home systems capable of more challenging artificial-intelligence feats, Siri at times no longer seems cutting edge. On Monday, June 13, 2016, Apple is expected to demonstrate how much smarter Siri can get as it kicks off its annual software conference. It's a potentially momentous time for the company; sales of its flagship iPhone are slowing, and AI is emerging as a key tech battleground.
