'Sunspring' movie: An intense and thought-provoking film written by artificial intelligence
"Sunspring," a movie that has been entirely written by algorithm, debuted on the website Ars Technica recently. The movie has been under the spotlight as the complete story of it has been written by artificial intelligence instead of normal human screenwriters. "Sunspring" is a short science fiction film about three people who are in a surrealistic future, seemingly a space station. Initially, the movie looks like a love triangle between three lead characters โ H (portrayed by "Silicon Valeey's Thomas Middleditch), who is wearing a gleaming gold jacket, H2 (played by Elisabeth Gray) who is operating the computers, and C (Humphrey Ker) who declares that he has to "go to the skull" as he puts his face in a bunch of green lights. Though the movie gives a vibe of a typical sci-fi B-movie, it is unlike any of the other Hollywood science fiction movies as the entire script of the movie has been done by AI.

File-encrypting ransomware programs have become one of the biggest threats to corporate networks worldwide and are constantly evolving by adding increasingly sophisticated detection-evasion and propagation techniques. In a world where any self-respecting malware author makes sure that his creations bypass antivirus detection before releasing them, enterprise security teams are forced to focus on improving their response times to infections rather than trying to prevent them all, which is likely to be a losing game. Exabeam, a provider of user and entity behavior analytics, believes that machine-learning algorithms can significantly improve ransomware detection and reaction time, preventing such programs from spreading inside the network and affecting a larger number of systems. Because the decryption price asked by ransomware authors is calculated per system, isolating affected computers as soon as possible is critical. Only last week the University of Calgary announced that it paid 20,000 Canadian dollars (around US 15,600) to ransomware authors to get the decryption keys for multiple systems.

It seems almost comical to think that artificial intelligence and machine learning are becoming, or rather have become, full-blown buzzwords. First of all, according to the annals of science fiction literature, we should have already invented a smarter-than-human AI by now, and according to "Terminator," we're 19 years overdue for a giant, AI-based nuclear annihilation of the human race. I prefer the 1970 movie, "Colossus: The Forbin Project," a film that does not appreciate the premise that the United States could, alone, create a computer smart enough to take over the world. Colossus, you see, required the help of its Soviet counterpart. The world of AI is far more scientific and mundane than this, however. Its history is littered with startups, hardware firms and software projects that were often just as much a product of the times as they were products of machine-learning advances.

It is far from being the apocalyptic extermination of the human race depicted in films like the Terminator, but it seems the rise of the machines has begun. Robots are starting to perform a growing number jobs of that have traditionally been filled by humans โ such as security patrols, courier deliveries and room service in hotels. These include five-feet tall security bots that are patrolling shopping centres and office buildings in California, using a range of sensors to look for anything suspicious. While there are many who fear robots are on the verge of stealing our jobs, it seems they have a weak spot - flat packed furniture.

It's a topic that's picking up steam, particularly as our cars, fitness monitors, search engines - so many things around us - become more intelligent. The conference in San Francisco on Monday will see the technology company showcase iOS 10, the latest version of the operating system that runs on iPhone and iPad. The software's virtual, voice-activated personal assistant Siri is expected to be expanded so that it works in a wider range of apps. Both Google and Facebook have already announced greater focus on their artificial intelligence products this year, with Google improving its Google Now software, while Facebook is introducing intelligent "bots" to Messenger that can understand requests and questions from users.
