Apple's Photos app will create automatic folders and videos from your work (Photo: Jefferson Graham) SAN FRANCISCO -- Apple spent two hours at the WWDC developer conference updating us on enhancements for mobile devices, computers, the Apple TV set-top box and the Apple Watch. The new software enhancements will be available for us in the fall. Apple's Photo app has hundreds, if not thousands, of photos taken by us, and locating them is a chore. So in a nod to rival Google Photos, Apple is going to use machine learning to use facial recognition to organize faces and identify places.
What underwater robots might be able to tell us about India's monsoon
Seven swimming robots will take to the sea later this month to help scientists investigate unanswered questions about India's monsoon season. After departing from the southern port city of Chennai, researchers will spend a month at sea releasing the torpedo-shaped underwater robots across a 400-kilometer (250-mi.) The robots, which will navigate to a depth of 1,000 meters, are programmed to transmit data measuring water salinity, temperature, and current via satellite. Lead researcher Adrian Matthews describes the Indian monsoon as "notoriously hard to predict." "It is a very complicated weather system and the processes are not understood or recorded in science," Dr. Matthews said in a press release.
The Road Ahead For AI in Cars EE Times
The market research firm expects the attach rate of AI-based systems in new vehicles to increase from 8 percent in 2015 (the vast majority of today's AI systems in cars are focused on speech recognition) to 109% in 2025. IHS sees multiple AI systems of various types to be installed in many cars. In the human-machine interface in vehicles, IHS believes AI will play a role in speech and gesture recognition, eye-tracking, driver monitoring and natural language interfaces. In the autonomous car, AI will advance machine vision systems, while it will also migrate in sensor fusion engine control units (ECU). In a phone interview with EE Times, Luca De Ambroggi, principal analyst, automotive semiconductors at IHS told us, "AI is viewed as a key enabler for real autonomous vehicles. Everyone in the automotive supply chain is getting pretty bullish."

Machine learning could help companies react faster to ransomware
File-encrypting ransomware programs have become one of the biggest threats to corporate networks worldwide and are constantly evolving by adding increasingly sophisticated detection-evasion and propagation techniques. In a world where any self-respecting malware author makes sure that his creations bypass antivirus detection before releasing them, enterprise security teams are forced to focus on improving their response times to infections rather than trying to prevent them all, which is likely to be a losing game. Exabeam, a provider of user and entity behavior analytics, believes that machine-learning algorithms can significantly improve ransomware detection and reaction time, preventing such programs from spreading inside the network and affecting a larger number of systems. Because the decryption price asked by ransomware authors is calculated per system, isolating affected computers as soon as possible is critical. Only last week the University of Calgary announced that it paid 20,000 Canadian dollars (around US 15,600) to ransomware authors to get the decryption keys for multiple systems.

The IEEE Transactions on Computational Intelligence and AI in Games (T-CIAIG) publishes archival journal quality original papers in computational intelligence and related areas in artificial intelligence applied to games, including but not limited to videogames, mathematical games, human–computer interactions in games, and games involving physical objects. Emphasis is placed on the use of these methods to improve performance in and understanding of the dynamics of games, as well as gaining insight into the properties of the methods as applied to games. It also includes using games as a platform for building intelligent embedded agents for the real world. Papers connecting games to all areas of computational intelligence and traditional AI are considered.
Apple Rolls Out Privacy-Sensitive Artificial Intelligence
On Monday Apple showed off a string of new iPhone features powered by recent advances in artificial intelligence--many of them aping ones already launched by rival Google. But Apple's announcements of features like facial recognition or software that knows what's in your photos, made during its annual Worldwide Developer Conference, were distinct in how much they emphasized privacy. Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering at Apple, repeatedly stated that the company is using machine-learning algorithms able to understand personal data such as photos only within the confines of a person's iPhone, not on Apple's cloud servers. "We believe you should have great features and great privacy," he said. A new version of Apple's Photos app, coming this fall with a new version of Apple's mobile operating system, will use facial recognition to maintain virtual albums of snaps containing people you frequently photograph.

Google's Artificial Intelligence for Healthcare is Making Strides in London
Google's DeepMind Health is a project that utilizes artificial intelligence to learn from data and make the healthcare process efficient. Included in the agreement are plans for developing hospital support systems such as bed and demand management software, financial control products, and private messaging and task management for junior doctors. Another key area in the partnership is real-time health prediction: the use of health care data to identify the risk of patient deterioration, death, and/or readmission. The agreement intends to "maximize the benefit of bringing together two parties who are centers of excellence in their respective fields, including improvements in clinical outcomes, patient safety, patient and staff experience, as well as cost reductions."
