Amazon hires AI expert to ward off Google in its cloud business

To pitch its cloud storage business, Google is leaning on its artificial intelligence features. Amazon, the market leader, is too. Now Amazon has recruited a leading expert in the field to up its game. Alex Smola, a top machine learning scientist at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and research alum of Google and Yahoo, is moving over to run the "Cloud Machine Learning Platform" at AWS, he wrote in a post. Google has created a new AI research group in Europe to focus on machine learning

Google announced in a blog post on Thursday that it has set up a new AI research group in Europe to focus on machine learning (ML). Machine learning is a field of computer science that gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed. Google Research, Europe -- as the group is known -- is based out of Google's office in Zurich, Switzerland, which is home to Google's largest engineering office outside the US. Google said the group, which is expected to grow to over 100 people in the coming years, will focus on three key areas: machine intelligence, natural language processing and understanding, and machine perception. Companies like Amazon, Facebook, and Microsoft are all investing heavily in these areas as they look to make their platforms and services more intelligent.


China's Midea tries to calm fears on bid for Germany's Kuka

Researchers including one of Indian-origin have provided a fresh insight into how human learning can foster smarter artificial intelligence (AI). Recent breakthroughs in creating artificial systems that outplay humans in a diverse array of challenging games have their roots in neural networks inspired by information processing in the brain. Now, researchers from Google DeepMind and Stanford University have updated a theory originally developed to explain how humans and other animals learn. First published in 1995, the theory states that learning is the product of two complementary learning systems in the brain. The first system gradually acquires knowledge and skills from exposure to experiences, and the second stores specific experiences so that these can be replayed to allow their effective integration into the first system.

'Squishy Finger' Soft Robot Hands Allow Sampling of Delicate Corals

Their squishy robotic hands can gather coral samples more delicately than robots, and in places humans can't reach. Developed with support from a National Geographic Innovation Challenge Grant, the hands were first tested in tanks in March 2015 and then taken to the Red Sea in May. After a successful expedition, Wood and Gruber hope the technology may have even broader applications.

In April I made one of my regular visits to the Oxford Martin School, where I am a Senior Visiting Fellow with an emphasis in human-machine collaboration and interdisciplinary teamwork. This visit I was honored and delighted to meet with over a dozen of the world's top experts in these matters and in artificial intelligence from Oxford's Future of Humanity Institute, including its director, Nick Bostrom. I was fascinated by the part of Professor Bostrom's recent book, "Superintelligence," about instilling human values into machines. As another of my current titles is chairman of the Human Rights Foundation, based in New York, this is an interesting disciplinary intersection for me!
