Your Self-Driving Car Will Be Programmed to Kill You--Deal With It

A recent survey shows that people want self-driving cars to be programmed to minimize casualties during a crash, even if it causes the death of the rider. Trouble is, the same survey shows that people don't actually want to ride in cars that are programmed this way. That's obviously a problem--and we're going to have to get over it. These are the kinds of thought experiments that are taught to Ethics 101 students during the first weeks of class--but now they're actually being applied to real life. Similar to the vexing trolley problem, manufacturers are struggling to come up with new rules for autonomous vehicles to guide them when a crash is inevitable, and the lives of people, both inside and outside of the car, are at stake.

Medical Minecraft uses IBM Watson to teach students about infectious diseases

IBM's Watson is still in its early days, but the cognitive computing system could end up having a substantial impact on a number of industries, particularly healthcare and education. For example, Alder Hey Children's Hospital in England is currently using the technology to improve the patient experience, while an interactive toy called the Cognitoys Dino uses Watson to answer a child's questions in a kid-friendly and personalized way. Another space that could largely benefit from Watson's capabilities is the gaming industry. The interactive nature of games paired with Watson's natural language processing capabilities and data analysis has already led to a number of new gaming initiatives, including the first-ever Minecraft game that utilizes Watson. Called'Medical Minecraft,' the game was recently created by a group of high school students.


Survey: Drivers 50 and up want more car safety tech

In the quest to be able to keep driving in the coming years, more drivers 50 and up are eager to try the latest in car-safety tech that might help them stay behind the wheel, a new study finds. Some 76% of drivers in that age group surveyed say they would look for a car with the latest safety features, finds the online survey by insurer The Hartford. "Our findings indicate that some drivers, age 50-plus, would be more willing to drive in certain situations if they had particular technologies," said Jodi Olshevski, a gerontologist who is executive director of The Hartford Center for Mature Marketing Excellence. They study suggests "they associate advanced technologies with enhanced safety," They are looking for advanced safety features like blind-spot warning, crash mitigation, lane-departure warnings and advanced headlights. Some of new technologies pave the way toward self-driving cars, which are still a few years away.


Scientists Connect Brain to a Basic Tablet--Paralyzed Patient Googles With Ease

A brunette lady in her early 50s, patient T6 suffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease), which causes progressive motor neuron damage. Mostly paralyzed from the neck down, T6 retains her sharp wit, love for red lipstick and miraculous green thumb. What she didn't have, until recently, was the ability to communicate with the outside world. Like T6, millions of people worldwide have severe paralysis from spinal cord injury, stroke or neurodegenerative diseases, which precludes their ability to speak, write or otherwise communicate their thoughts and intentions to their loved ones.


It's a Feeding Frenzy For Artificial Intelligence Startups

At a recent presentation in San Francisco, CB Insights CEO Anand Sanwal said half-jokingly that if startups want attention from investors, they should put phrases like "artificial intelligence" and "machine learning" in their pitch deck. While there's an argument to be made that AI is over-hyped as a technology, there's data to back up Sanwal's tongue-in-cheek advice: Mergers and acquisitions of AI startups increased by a factor of seven between 2011 and 2015, from five to more than 35 deals, according to the research firm. The increase runs against the grain of what the Silicon Valley Business Journal reported as an overall decline in the number of exits and deals of startups across fields starting in the second quarter of 2014. The poster child for the recent surge in interest in AI: Twitter's acquisition of machine learning startup Magic Pony Technology, announced earlier this month. If you look at the deal primarily as an "acquihire," Twitter is reportedly paying 13 million per machine-learning PhD.

Mumbai: There is tremendous buzz around machine learning, broadly described as a type of artificial intelligence (AI) that provides computers with the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed. However, despite an exponential increase in power, computers have typically proved incompetent at things that are really simple to human beings--like recognizing the dog in a picture containing a dog, or understanding speech. The trend, however, is changing. Consider'Deep Learning', which describes a collection of techniques that allow computational tasks that were previously thought impossible. Facebook Inc, for instance, uses it to identify faces, and when Google Inc recently announced that their algorithms could not only'see' a dog but also identify it as a Pomeranian, they heralded the maturity of Deep Learning techniques.

When Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk proclaims that artificial intelligence is "our biggest existential threat," it makes headlines worldwide. But what goes unreported is that the very search engines people used to find Musk's comments are themselves an example of how AI has subtly but forcefully become a part of everyday, real-world life. It's tempting to assume that the "dire warnings" about AI being a threat to mankind were mostly tongue-in-cheek, but the end result is that just as it happened in the 1980s and '90s, the hype over AI is again outpacing the reality (virtual and otherwise). The first question that needs to be answered though is: Whatever happened to AI and why did it go underground for so many years?


Ray Kurzweil's Wildest Prediction: Nanobots Will Plug Our Brains Into the Web by the 2030s

I consider Ray Kurzweil a very close friend and a very smart person. Ray is a brilliant technologist, futurist, and a director of engineering at Google focused on AI and language processing. As reported, "of the 147 predictions that Kurzweil has made since the 1990s, fully 115 of them have turned out to be correct, and another 12 have turned out to be "essentially correct" (off by a year or two), giving his predictions a stunning 86% accuracy rate." 'Mass Effect Andromeda' novels tie into the full video game saga

Titan is also publishing a trilogy of novels based on the Dishonored series between July 2016 and June 2017. All three books are written by sci-fi author Adam Christopher and the first installment is called The Corroded Man. Dishonored 2, the sequel to 2012's Dishonored, will hit PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on November 11th. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is also getting a tie-in novel from Titan and developer Eidos Montreal, dubbed Deus Ex: Black Light. The game is set to land on August 23rd and Black Light will hit bookshelves that same month.
