Sequencing is a task for children that aims to improve understanding of the temporal occurrence in a sequence of events, so that they sort various images (sometimes with captions) into a coherent story. Researchers from Virginia Tech and TTI Chicago have proposed the task of machine-learning sequencing โ€“ given a jumbled set of aligned image-caption pairs that belong to a story, the task is that the computer needs to sort them in a way that they form a consistent story. They have used stories from the Sequential Image Narrative Dataset where a set of 5 aligned image-caption pairs together form a coherent story, and given a jumbled input story, they have trained machine-learning models to sort them. They have proposed a task of visual story sequencing and implemented two approaches to solve the task. The first one is based on individual story elements to predict the position, and the other one is based on the pairwise story elements to predict the relative order of the story elements.

Artificial intelligence that can understand and answer any work-related question it is asked has been made available in the UK for the first time. The computer software, called Starmind, uses machine learning to understand queries, then source answers from previous staff conversations on a subject or track down experts within the company who are able to help. Its creators refer to it as'brain technology', adding its aim is to become a central knowledge bank within any company, an instant database of information that can be accessed by anyone. Artificial intelligence software which understands and answers work-related questions has been made available in the UK. Starmind co-founder Pascal Kaufmann said of the technology: 'Thousands of human brains connected can outsmart any machine today.


AI Pilot Drone Beats Retired US Air Force Colonel in Simulated Combat

ALPHA, whose destiny was once just to help train fighter pilots in simulated exercises, has proved to be so good that the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is investigating whether the bot could provide the AI blueprint for combat drones in the future, potentially flying missions alongside human pilots. "ALPHA is an incredibly difficult opponent to face," its developer Nick Earnest, CEO of Psibernetix told Digital Trends. "Even flying against other pilots when ALPHA has severe handicaps to a number of its systems -- including speed, turning, missile capability and sensors -- it is able to win," Earnest said. "There is additional work to be done to both increase ALPHA's capabilities and improve its model fidelity -- but these results represent a significant breakthrough," said Earnest, University of Cincinnati graduate said. ALPHA was created using a Genetic Fuzzy Tree (GFT) system that uses genetic algorithms to train independent and interconnected systems.

A recent event โ€“ "The Robots are coming: The future of work"- at the South Bank Centre brought together a panel of experts on robotics and artificial intelligence to debate what awaits our working lives in the near future. I was there to explore the topic and report on the talk. Sabine Hauert (pictured right) is a lecturer in robotics and member of Bristol Robotics Laboratory, an academic centre for multi-disciplinary robotics research in the UK.


Ex-Navy SEAL becomes first to die in self-driving car after Tesla crash

A former Navy SEAL has become the first person to die at the wheel of a self-driving car - and a witness has claimed he was watching a Harry Potter movie when his Tesla collided with a truck while on autopilot. Joshua Brown, 40, died after his computer-guided Tesla Model S plowed into a tractor trailer on a freeway in Williston, Florida, in May. Despite the claim, Tesla says it is not possible to play films on the vehicle's touchscreen - however it is possible Brown was using another device. The driver of the truck, Frank Baressi, said the Tesla driver was'playing Harry Potter on the TV screen' at the time of the crash. 'It was still playing when he died and snapped a telephone pole a quarter mile down the road,' Baressi, 62, said.

A man has died in the first known fatal crash involving a car in self-driving mode, prompting an urgent investigation by electric car makers Tesla and US authorities. Joshua Brown, 40, died when his Tesla Model S collided with the white trailer of a lorry on a dry Florida road in May. According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, the Tesla's windscreen hit the bottom of the trailer as it passed underneath, and the car kept going, leaving the road. It continued, striking a fence, crossing a field, passing through another fence before finally hitting a pole about 30m south of the road. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have begun an investigation into the autopilot system used in 25,000 Model S cars.


US investigation after fatal Tesla 'Autopilot' crash

The US government has launched an investigation into the safety of automaker Tesla's autonomous driving system after what may be the world's first known death involving "self-driving" technology. A driver of a Tesla Model S car operating the system, which is called Autopilot, was killed in a collision with a truck two months ago, prompting the probe, which was disclosed on Thursday. The investigation comes as Tesla and other automakers are gearing up to offer systems that allow vehicles to drive themselves under certain conditions across a wide range of vehicles over the next few years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it was now investigating 25,000 Model S sedans that were equipped with Autopilot. The accident, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, killed Joshua Brown on a clear, dry roadway on May 7 in the state of Florida.
