Seattle-based machine learning startup Dato, which originally launched as GraphLab, announced today that it has changed its name again. Now, the company is known as Turi, an ode to computer science legend Alan Turing. This past September, Turi -- then Dato -- found itself in a trademark infringement argument with fellow tech startup Datto after Dato changed its name from GraphLab in January 2015. Datto, which has been offering data backup and recovery services from its Connecticut headquarters since 2007, first complained about Dato's new name just weeks after the company finished its rebranding from GraphLab. Datto argued that Dato's new name would cause confusion.

Scientists are closer to creating a computer with emotions. Researchers in Russia are expected to reveal an emotional computer within a year and a half, which will be able to think like a person and build up trust, its creators say. The system, called'Virtual Actor', is being created by the National Research Nuclear University in Moscow. Computers are machines used for practical reasons, without any emotion involved. The AI, called'Virtual Actor', is expected to be online within the next year and a half.

Soon, when restaurant-goers hear "May I take your order?" those words may be coming from a robot. Some restaurants have started experimenting with human-like robots instead of human cashiers, allowing consumers to pay for their meals without interacting with another person. Although many restaurants have allowed digital ordering, either online, by kiosk or on tablets at the table, the practice of using humanoid, or human-like robots, is still in its earliest stages, and it's primarily happening in Asia so far. Experts say the robots could benefit restaurants and lead to wider adoption -- if diners aren't too freaked out by them. Pizza Hut YUM, 1.74% is the latest company to try a robot cashier, in a partnership with robotics company SoftBank Robotics and MasterCard MA, 0.76%, which has created the payment app. The application works only with MasterCard's MasterPass, a digital wallet that allows payment by MasterCard cards, as well as credit, debit or prepaid cards from Maestro, American Express AXP, 2.84%, Diner's Club, Discover DFS, 3.36% and Visa V, 2.46% .

In the wake of post-protest shootings that left five police officers dead and seven others wounded, along with two civilians, police traded gunfire last night with a suspect inside a downtown Dallas parking garage. Eventually, law enforcement sent a "bomb robot" (most likely shorthand for a remotely controlled bomb disposal robot) armed with an explosive, to the suspect's location, then detonated the explosive, killing the suspect. "We saw no other option but to use our bomb robot and place a device on its extension for it to detonate where the suspect was…other options would have exposed our officers to great danger," said Dallas Police Chief David O. Brown. "The suspect is deceased as a result of detonating the bomb." Repurposing a robot that was created to prevent death by explosion clearly contrasts with the way these machines are normally used. Bomb disposal robots are routinely used to minimize the potential of harm to officers and civilians when disarming or clearing potential explosives from an area.

Karissa Mitchell knows what it's like to stand out in a crowd, which is why she identifies with Elsa, the main character of Disney's animated film "Frozen," so well. Like Elsa, who faces criticism for having trouble controlling her unique powers, 9-year-old Karissa, of Stillwater, New York, was born missing her right hand and most of her wrist. But thanks to a group of Siena College students who 3-D printed a "Frozen"-themed prosthetic arm for Karissa, the little girl is feeling more confident in her skin. "Karissa really identifies with Elsa because she knows what it's like to be different from everyone else," Maria Mitchell, Karissa's mother, said in a Siena College news release. "She doesn't want to be seen as different, which has made her extremely determined to do things as well, if not better, than others."

Negotiators had been talking for hours with the hunkered-down killer of five police officers in downtown Dallas when the man suddenly resumed firing with an assault rifle. Fearing additional casualties, the officers deployed a small, remote-controlled robot to carry an explosive device near shooter Micah Xavier Johnson, which they then detonated, killing him. "We saw no other option but to use our bomb robot and place a device on its extension for it to detonate where the suspect was," Police Chief David Brown said at a news conference Friday morning. "Other options would have exposed our officers to grave danger .… We have confirmed that he's been deceased because of the detonation of the bomb."

As the convoy traveled down Interstate 69, regular Michigan motorists might have not believed they were driving next to the future of warfare. But for all their humdrum khaki looks, these were platooning, semi-autonomous army trucks, moving as one organism. Late last month, the army dropped these four beta trucks into real Michigan traffic, with human drivers aboard as backups. Over seven miles, the vehicles used cameras and LIDAR to watch the road. They used dedicated short-range radio, also known as vehicle-to-vehicle communication, to chat with each other and even with infrastructure Michigan's DOT installed for the purpose, getting advance notice of things like changing speed limits and closed lanes ahead.
