Nissan's highway self-driving system hits Japanese roads in August

Nissan has a new autonomous driving system called ProPILOT, and it's coming to its first production vehicle in August. ProPILOT, a self-driving feature designed for use in single-lane highway driving situation, arrives in the Nissan Serena first, which is currently set to go on sale next month. Likely in light of recent events faced by Tesla around its own Autopilot self-driving tech, Nissan is very clearly laying out what ProPILOT is โ€“ and what it isn't. In a press release, the company notes that ProPILOT is single-lane, as mentioned (Autopilot can manage lane changes) and that it controls steering, acceleration and braking, and is designed to be used when traffic is heavy and the going is slow, or during extended commutes. Like other cruise-assist features you may have seen before, ProPILOT can automatically manage the distance between your car and any leading car, between speeds ranging from about 18mph to about 60mph.

But no matter how AR ends up altering people's love lives, surely no one expected the shift to be heralded by a rogue Charizard. Less than a week ago, it would've been easy to assume a young person determinedly flicking at their smartphone screen in a bar or coffee shop was swiping through potential dates on Tinder. This week, it's far more likely they're playing Pokรฉmon Go, the mobile game that is currently taking over the US and is already ensconced on more Americans' Android phones than Tinder managed to find its way on to in four years.


Cozmo Is an Artificially Intelligent Toy Truck That's Also the Future of Robotics

A tiny robot sits beside the laptop, looking like one of those anthropomorphic automobiles that show up in Pixar's Cars movies. Almost instantly, it wakes up, rolls down the table, and counts to four. This is Cozmo--an artificially intelligent toy robot unveiled late last month by San Francisco startup Anki--and Tappeiner, one of the company's founders, is programming the little automaton to do new things. The programs are simple--he also teaches Cozmo to stack blocks--but they're supposed to be simple. Tappeiner is using Anki's newly unveiled software development kit--an SDK, in coder parlance--that he says even the greenest of coders can use to tweak the behavior of the toy robot.

But fans of Pokรฉmon GO claim the augmented reality craze - which since its launch last week has had users chasing around their neighborhoods in pursuit of fictional creatures - has given rise to so many chance meetings between strangers that people have started using it as a dating app. Numerous users have shared their stories of romance spurred by the app - claiming that they were either asked out while playing the game or invited on a Pokรฉmon GO date with their potential love interest. It has also proved a hit as a dating activity among existing couples and as a new way of making friends. Such is the popularity of the game - which has already been installed on more Android devices than dating app Tinder - that some fans are using it to replace movie nights, giving rise to the phrase'Pokรฉmon GO and chill', adapted from'Netflix and chill'.

Humans have been farming for thousands of years since the first crops were planted and animals began being domesticated during the Mesolithic era. But technology could soon be squeezing us out of our traditional roles as farmers, as robots take to the fields. A robot that is capable of herding cattle and pulling trailers through the mud has gone on trial at a farm in Australia while another capable of pick broccoli six times faster than humans is being tested in Britain. SwagBot, an Australian farming machine, can herd cattle and pull trailers through mud, is being developed at the University of Sydney. At the same time, the University of Lincoln is building and testing a robot that can pick broccoli six times faster than humans. It can identify broccoli in fields with up to 95 per cent accuracy, the researchers say.

Nasa has announced that it has found evidence of flowing water on Mars. Scientists have long speculated that Recurring Slope Lineae -- or dark patches -- on Mars were made up of briny water but the new findings prove that those patches are caused by liquid water, which it has established by finding hydrated salts. Several hundred camped outside the London store in Covent Garden. The 6s will have new features like a vastly improved camera and a pressure-sensitive "3D Touch" display

Douglas Hines started out with what sounded like a nice idea. In the early 2000s, the former Bell Labs engineer was busy caring for his elderly father and building his own technology business. That's when he first came up with the idea for a companion robot: a machine that could look after his dad and keep him in touch with the outside world via webcam. Hines started working on a prototype, but ran into trouble finding financial and legal support for the project. So he gave up, and instead turned his attentions to Roxxxy, a life-size sexbot dressed in filmy black lingerie ("always turned on and ready to talk or play!").

UC grad builds Artificial Intelligence for U.S. Air Force

That was until he began working with a system developed by a University of Cincinnati doctoral graduate in collaboration with the Air Force Research Laboratory based at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
