Pokรฉmon Go has quickly become one of the most used apps beating the previous record held by Candy Crush Saga. The Pokรฉmon Go game, using augmented reality and GPS, allows players to capture, battle, and train virtual creatures, called Pokรฉmon, who appear on device screens as though in the real world. As the game has taken over, so have the range of ways in which players can out think Pokรฉmon. This weekend saw Michael Hsu, a front and back-end developer and part-time university lecturer in California, win the Best Use of Watson challenge at the AT&T Shape Tech Expo Hackathon in San Francisco. "I saw the Watson Visual Recognition API and wondered, what if I could get Watson to play Pokรฉmon Go for me?"


Robots will train doctors in the next 10 years, says a MIT expert working on one

Robots are going to play an integral role in hospital care soon. At least that's what Julie Shah -- an MIT professor who leads the Interactive Robotics Group at the university's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory -- is working on. Shah recently programmed a Nao robot to watch how medical assistants perform tasks so it could help assign patients to the appropriate doctor and move patients to operating rooms and beds. That may seem like a simple task, but can actually be quite complex to handle. At Mount Sinai Beth Israel, the head nurse of the labor ward coordinates 10 nurses, 20 patients, and 20 rooms at the same time.

There's a reason why you don't see rotary motors or joints in nature: at anything above the molecular scale, too much stuff has to be permanently attached to too much other stuff for any of it to be freely rotating in the way a mechanical wheel or axle is. The more bioinspiration you want to work into a robot, the more of an issue this becomes, which is why it's particularly impressive that researchers at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., have managed to put four silicone-based wheels with air-powered motors inside of them on a robot that's as soft as a Crocs shoe. Most squishy robots with pneumatic muscles exert force on the environment through bending: a pneumatic chamber that's constrained on one side will curve when inflated, which generates enough motion that robots can walk around on legs and pick things up with grippers. Directional motion like this is very common in nature: most of your muscles work this way, exerting force one way over a finite distance, in cooperative opposition to another muscle that exerts force the other way. You also have muscles that work together in peristalsis, in which synchronized contractions and relaxations generates a propagating wave.

I could tell Cozmo was sleeping because of the audio that was emanating from the speaker on his head: the sound of snoring. In between the purrs of his breaths, I heard a few seconds of music on what sounded like clarinet and strings. It was an expectant melody, a signal that Cozmo was ready to greet the day.

MARLO is being designed by an engineering team at the University of Michigan. Although its walking capabilities look like MARLO is on the rough end of a day-long bender, MARLO's ability to traverse such uneven terrain would be a big step forward for robotics.
