PCWorld

PCWorld reports Acer unveiled two new Snapdragon-powered laptops at Computex 2026: the Swift Spin 14 AI and budget-focused Aspire Go 15. The Swift Spin 14 AI features Snapdragon X2 Elite/Plus chips with 80 TOPS AI performance, while the Aspire Go 15 uses a Snapdragon C chip prioritizing portability. Acer emphasizes exceptional battery life with the Aspire Go 15 offering up to 23 hours, marking the company's first Snapdragon entry into budget laptops. Acer showed off two new Snapdragon-powered laptops at Computex 2026: the Swift Spin 14 AI and the Aspire Go 15. The Swift Spin 14 AI is definitely the flashier one, but the cheaper Aspire Go 15 feels like the bigger story and I want to tell you why. Acer is finally bringing a lower-end Snapdragon chip into its budget lineup. Most people shopping for a cheap laptop care more about battery life anyway, and that's what Snapdragon chips do well.

The Download: climate tech goes public and the AI Hype Index returns

MIT Technology Review

Plus: Illinois just passed what could become America's strongest AI safety law. Climate tech companies are going public. Solar and battery company Solv Energy went public in February, hitting a $6 billion valuation. X-energy, which builds small modular nuclear reactors, followed at $11.5 billion. Then came geothermal company Fervo Energy, reaching a market cap of about $12.4 billion. All three have been IPO success stories.

Taiwan suspects Nvidia chips smuggled to China via Japan

The Japan Times

Japan is one of many locations in Asia where Chinese companies access American AI chips -- by renting hardware that's owned by foreign firms and installed in overseas data centers. Taiwan prosecutors suspect that three individuals successfully smuggled at least one shipment of Nvidia artificial intelligence chips to China after first exporting them to Japan, people familiar with the matter said. The trio was detained last week by Taiwan's Keelung District Prosecutors Office for allegedly falsifying documents related to exports of Super Micro Computer servers containing advanced Nvidia chips, which the U.S. has barred from sale to China without a license from Washington. The move marked the island democracy's first public crackdown on AI chip diversion after years of pressure from the U.S. to take a more active role in curtailing China's tech access. When Taiwan authorities apprehended the three defendants -- who've now been officially detained -- they also seized about 50 servers for which they accuse the trio of preparing fraudulent export documents. But at least one shipment had already gone through Taiwan customs, according to the people familiar with the matter, who requested anonymity to speak about an ongoing criminal investigation.

Government urges transport firms to guard against AI misuse

The Japan Times

The transport ministry urged executives of infrastructure operators to play active roles in taking measures against cyberattacks and secure sufficient funding and personnel. The transport ministry called on railway firms and other infrastructure operators Thursday to take measures against the misuse of high-performance artificial intelligence models, including U.S. startup Anthropic's Claude Mythos. The instructions were made at a meeting with operators from six infrastructure sectors, also including ports, airports, logistics and water supply. The ministry said that it will set up support desks for those operators regarding cybersecurity. Mythos is said to have advanced capabilities in detecting system vulnerabilities. The Japanese government has already made similar requests to telecommunications operators, broadcasters, financial institutions and local governments.

New Moms Are Returning to Coding Jobs Radically Reshaped by AI

WIRED

New mothers working in software development are staring down an AI-pilled workplace they barely recognize. As Danielle settled into the rhythms of new motherhood, her profession underwent a drastic reinvention. Danielle, who asked to use her first name to avoid damaging her job prospects, worked as a software developer at a car company in Portland, Oregon. Before she left the workforce in mid-2024, barely anybody used AI to write code; by the time she was ready to return, a year later, it had become the expectation. Once upon a time, she had been drawn to coding for the job security it offered, but AI was threatening to upend that.

These Ebola Researchers Are Stuck in US Due to Trump's Funding Cuts

WIRED

The Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases were launched during the Covid-19 pandemic. The group lost its funding under Trump in part due to conspiracy theories. As the world struggles to contain the rapidly growing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Ituri province, a vital network of research centers has been unable to help on the ground. The reason: The Trump administration slashed its funding last year, in part due to conspiracy theories about the origins of Covid-19. Established in 2020 by the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases (CREID) Network was conducting research into viruses that emerge from wildlife and spill over to people, including the family of viruses that Ebola belongs to.

Amazon Thinks the Future of Data Centers Depends on a Technical Problem It Just Solved

WIRED

The tech giant says a breakthrough in data-center networking has dramatically accelerated the flow of information through its massive cloud infrastructure. Amazon says it recently achieved a major breakthrough in networking design--and has been quietly deploying the new technology in its data centers since late last year. The company claims it has significantly increased data speeds while reducing energy use, potentially giving the tech giant an edge as companies race to build ever-faster systems in the cloud. The new technology hinges on a "quasi-random" design that combines elements of traditional, structured data networks with the performance advantages of more random architectures. Researchers have explored random networks for decades, but the technology has never been successfully scaled.
