The neural circuitry of affect-induced distortions of trust
Aversive affect is likely a key source of irrational human decision-making, but still, little is known about the neural circuitry underlying emotion-cognition interactions during social behavior. We induced incidental aversive affect via prolonged periods of threat of shock, while 41 healthy participants made investment decisions concerning another person or a lottery. Negative affect reduced trust, suppressed trust-specific activity in the left temporoparietal junction (TPJ), and reduced functional connectivity between the TPJ and emotion-related regions such as the amygdala. The posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) seems to play a key role in mediating the impact of affect on behavior: Functional connectivity of this brain area with left TPJ was associated with trust in the absence of negative affect, but aversive affect disrupted this association between TPJ-pSTS connectivity and behavioral trust. Optimizing the Human-Robot Workplace
Case Western Reserve University engineers are working with partners at two other universities and an Italian-owned company in Michigan to study, predict, and optimize how robots will interact with human co-workers in factories of the future. While robots have been increasingly integrated into manufacturing since their introduction in the early 1960s, true human-robot workplace collaboration is still in the early stages and is only recently being earnestly studied by academics. Most researchers anticipate humans taking on the more nimble decision-making, while robots contribute by lifting heavy tools or putting the right tool at a worker's side when needed. "You could see this more on an assembly line, where the human is building an engine, screwing the spark plugs into the engine block, and the robot is handing him the right tools and parts at the right time," says Robert Gao, Chairman of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Gao is principal investigator on a National Science Foundation-funded project examining robot-human collaborations in manufacturing workplaces.

On Sept. 16, 2007, a Japanese YouTuber who goes by the handle "Computing Aesthetic" uploaded a forty-eight-second-long video with the deafening title, "ULTRA MEGA SUPER LUCKY SHOT." The video shows a high-scoring shot in Peggle, a vastly popular video game, loosely based on Japanese pachinko machines, in which a ball bearing clatters down the screen, accruing points as it bounces through a crowd of candy-colored pegs, which disappear shortly after being touched; more bounces, more points. Although Peggle involves some skill--before firing the ball, the player must carefully aim the launcher that dangles at the top of the screen--you are principally at the mercy of the luck of the bounce. In Computing Aesthetic's footage, the points pile up as the ball bounces fortuitously between pegs. To underscore the seemingly miraculous shot, Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" blares euphorically until, in the video's final moments, the ball bearing sinks into the bucket at the base of the screen and the words "FEVER SCORE" flash onscreen.

Nutella tests out voice commerce with first sampling push in the US - Digiday
Nutella-maker Ferrero is trying out voice commerce. The advertiser is one of the first in the U.S. to use the "send me a sample" application, which delivers a free sample-sized jar of its Nutella chocolate hazelnut spread to people who have it installed in either their Amazon or Google voice assistants. Whenever someone repeats the "send a sample" phrase followed by the name of the brand, an order is made by the app, which pulls delivery information either from the Amazon or Google account linked to the voice assistant. Diageo used the app in the U.K., last year, and whereas Diageo was experimenting with calls to action and aspects of sonic branding, Nutella wants to use the intel to gauge whether voice could be the commerce driver it anticipates. Should enough deliveries come via the app -- Diageo's trial had more than 6,000 requests in its first week -- then Nutella will explore other options, said Ferrero's head of e-commerce in the U.S. Rachel Tetreault, who said voice search could be something it looks into later this year.
