Voicesense makes an intriguing promise to its clients: give us someone's voice, and we'll tell you what they will do. The Israeli company uses real-time voice analysis during calls to evaluate whether someone is likely to default on a bank loan, buy a more expensive product, or be the best candidate for a job. It's one of a crop of companies looking for the personal insights contained in our speech. In recent years, researchers and startups have taken note of the rich trove of information that can be mined from voice, especially as the popularity of home assistants like Amazon's Alexa make consumers increasingly comfortable talking to their devices. The voice technology market is growing and is expected to reach $15.5 billion by 2029, according to a report by business analytics firm IdTechEx.
Machine Learning Estimates Prognosis in Adult Congenital Heart Disease - Medical Bag
Machine learning algorithms using large datasets may be utilized to accurately estimate prognosis and guide therapy for patients with adult congenital heart disease, according to a study published in the European Heart Journal. The investigators of this large cohort, single-center study sought to examine the utility of machine learning algorithms as a prognostic model and to guide therapeutic decision-making in patients with adult congenital heart disease or pulmonary hypertension. The study sample included 10,019 adults under active follow-up at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London between 2000 and 2018. Patient data were retrospectively collected -- including clinical and demographic data, ECG parameters, cardiopulmonary exercise data, and laboratory markers -- and incorporated into deep learning algorithms. Specific deep learning models were then built for patient categorization into diagnostic subsets, disease complexity subsets, and by New York Heart Association (NYHA) class.

AI uses Wi-Fi data to estimate how many people are in a room
You can tell a lot about people from their Wi-Fi connections -- including, as it turns out, how many of them are standing near an access point. In a newly published research paper ("DeepCount: Crowd Counting with WiFi via Deep Learning") on the preprint server Arxiv.org, Their work comes not long after researchers at Ryerson University in Toronto demonstrated a neural network that can determine whether smartphone owners are walking, biking, or driving around a few city blocks by using Wi-Fi data, and after Purdue University researchers developed a system that uses Wi-Fi access logs to suss out relationships among users, locations, and activities. In this latest study, the team leveraged channel state information (CSI) -- specifically phase and amplitude -- to create a two-model system consisting of an activity recognition model and deep learning model. The deep learning model was tasked with correlating the number of people and channels by mapping those people's activities to CSI, while the former recognized when someone entered or left the room via an electronic switch.
Artificial intelligence speeds up!
Milan, March 14, 2019 - A group at Politecnico di Milano has developed an electronic circuit able to solve a system of linear equations in a single operation in the timescale of few tens of ns. The performance of this new circuit is superior not only to the classical digital computers, but also to the futuristic quantum computers: it will be soon possible to develop a new generation of computing accelerators that will revolutionize the technology of artificial intelligence. Solving a system of linear equations means finding the unknown vector x which satisfies the equation Ax b, where A is a matrix of coefficients and b is a known vector. To solve this problem, a conventional digital computer executes an algorithm which takes several operations, thus translating into considerable time and energy consumption. The new circuit, which has been developed in the frame of the ERC European project RESCUE (Resistive switch computing beyond CMOS), solves systems of linear equations (Ax b) thanks to an innovative method of in-memory computing, where the coefficients of matrix A are stored in a special device called memristor.

Bennu asteroid keeps spinning faster and scientists aren't sure why
A distant space rock called Bennu is spinning faster meaning its rotation period is getting shorter by about one second every 100 years - but scientists are still trying to figure out why. NASA is observing the asteroid to help them understand the evolution of other similar objects, their potential threat to Earth, and if they could be mined for resources. Scientists used data gathered during the OSIRIS-REx mission, before the probe's arrival, to calculate that Bennu's rotation rate is speeding up over time. Bennu is 70 million miles (110m km) away from Earth. As it moves through space at about 63,000 miles per hour (101,000 km per hour), it also spins, completing a full rotation every 4.3 hours.
Overwatch League teams' schedule includes match play in their home cities next year
The Overwatch League is going on the road. The esports league introduced by video game publisher Activision Blizzard last year announced its fledgling Overwatch League will move to home city competition starting in 2020. The shift will allow all 20 of the league's teams to play in venues within their host cities and travel for road matches against competitors. The announcement was made during the South by Southwest Festival in Austin on Friday. Entering its second season, the league – featuring Blizzard's first-person shooter video game "Overwatch" – currently hosts all teams' matches live at the Blizzard Arena in Los Angeles.
