In the future, personalized AI assistants will use knowledge of our behaviors to inform us of goings-on and do chores, and as we grow older, they'll provide companionship and assistance when caregivers aren't around. These assistants will not only chart our calendars and supply answers to questions, but will help administer medical treatments, assist us in making difficult decisions, and connect us with the people we care deeply about. That's the vision the Computing Community Consortium (CCC), an organization representing over 220 North American academic departments, industrial research labs, and professional societies, articulated in a draft of its 20-year roadmap for AI research in the U.S., which was published this month. Its organizers -- who include University of Southern California director of knowledge technologies Yolanda Gil and Dr. Fei-Fei Li, a Stanford professor and formerly Google's chief AI scientist -- picture personal assistants that will fundamentally transform human lives around the world for the better. "[AI] will enable an elderly population to live longer independently, AI health coaches will provide advice for lifestyle choices, [and] customized AI tutors will broaden education opportunities," according to the report.
Meteorological Agency starts development of AI-based system to predict windy events in Japan
The Meteorological Agency's research arm recently began developing an artificial intelligence-based system to predict high-wind events severe enough to impact the safety of land and air transportation, officials said. The system, which the Meteorological Research Institute aims to develop over a period of four years, is also expected to help self-driving cars avoid accidents caused by strong wind, including tornados and downbursts. Major wind systems develop quickly and their random nature has made it difficult to forecast their potential severity or location. East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) has been operating its own system to detect possible gusts following a derailment caused by strong winds in 2005, but its application has been limited. By monitoring air current data obtained from weather radar, the Meteorological Research Institute's prototype system has been able to detect the formation of high wind events with 90 percent accuracy, the officials said.

When Dr. Eric Topol joined an experiment on using artificial intelligence to get personalized nutrition advice, he was hopeful. For two weeks, Topol, a cardiologist at Scripps Research, dutifully tracked everything he ate, wore a sensor to monitor his blood-glucose levels, and even collected and mailed off a stool sample for an analysis of his gut microbiome. The diet advice he got back stunned him: Eat Bratwurst, nuts, danishes, strawberries, and cheesecake. "It was crazy stuff," Topol told me. Bratwurst and cheesecake are foods Topol generally shirks because he considers them "unhealthy."

Special report Quantum computing has been portrayed as a threat to current encryption schemes, but the ability of finicky vaporware to overthrow the current security regime looks like it's massively overstated. Richard Evers, cryptographer for a Canadian security biz called Kryptera, argues that media coverage and corporate pronouncements about quantum computing have left people with the impression that current encryption algorithms will soon become obsolete. As an example, Evers points to remarks made by Arvind Krishna, director of IBM research, at The Churchill Club in San Francisco last May, that those interested in protecting data for at least ten years "should probably seriously consider whether they should start moving to alternate encryption techniques now." In a post Evers penned recently with his business partner Alastair Sweeny, he contends, "The hard truth is that widespread beliefs about security and encryption may prove to be based on fantasy rather than fact." And the reason for this, he suggests, is the desire for funding and fame.
Estimates of job loss due to automation miss one big factor
Predicting the scale of AI-induced job losses has become a cottage industry for economists and consulting firms the world over. Depending on which model one uses, estimates range from terrifying to totally not a problem. Since 2013, the most cited predictions include a study from Oxford University that predicted 47% of US jobs could be automated within the next decade or two; an Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) report that suggested just 9% of jobs in the United States were at high risk of automation; PwC research that found 38% of jobs in the United States were at high risk of automation by the early 2030s; and a McKinsey report that found around 50% of work tasks around the world are already automatable. A lot of this difference can be explained by the methodology of these studies. Looking at whether an entire occupation can be automated is a different question than whether tasks within that occupation can be automated.
