Two Kroger markets in Houston are rolling out a self-driving car program, in which orders can be placed online and delivered right to your home without a driver. The self-driving service will be offered at stores in South Post Oak Road and Buffalo Speedway, per ABC13. Those in Texas can access the service from the 77401, 77096, 77005 and 77025 ZIP codes, for same- or next-day delivery. The delivery service was conceived by the robotics company Nuro, founded by two ex-Google employees.

Artificial intelligence can identify people in pictures, find the next TV series you should binge watch on Netflix, and even drive a car. But on Friday, when a suspected terrorist in New Zealand streamed live video to Facebook of a mass murder, the technology was of no help. The gruesome broadcast went on for at least 17 minutes until New Zealand police reported it to the social network. Recordings of the video and related posts about it rocketed across social media while companies tried to keep up. Why can't AI, which is already used by major social networks to help moderate the status updates, photos, and videos users upload, simply be deployed in greater measures to remove such violence as swiftly as it appears? A big reason is that whether it's hateful written posts, pornography, or violent images or videos, artificial intelligence still isn't great at spotting objectional content online.

That's the new reality for many classrooms across Abu Dhabi, where a company is using artificial intelligence to create a new learning experience. Established four years ago, Alef Education has managed to get its digital education platform into dozens of schools in Abu Dhabi, as well as Al Ain, another city in the emirate. Alef has worked closely with the government of the United Arab Emirates to bring the platform to 25,000 students at 57 public schools. It is also used in two private schools in Abu Dhabi. And the startup has made its first move into the United States, where its technology is used in two private schools in New York.

In the early part of the 20th century, a group of German experimental psychologists began to question how the brain acquires meaningful perceptions of a world that is otherwise chaotic and unpredictable. To answer this question, they developed the notion of the "gestalt effect"--the idea that when it comes to perception, the whole is something other than the parts. Sine then, psychologists have discovered that the human brain is remarkably good at perceiving complete pictures on the basis of fragmentary information. A good example is the figure shown here. Nicole Eagan believes a robot uprising draws nigh. As the chief executive of Darktrace, a cybersecurity "unicorn," or private firm valued at more than $1 billion, Eagan helps companies spot intruders in corporate networks, quarantine them, and defend data. The British firm's technology uses machine learning techniques to gain an understanding of the internal state of customers' networks and then watches for telltale deviations from the norm that may indicate foul play. While Darktrace uses A.I. techniques for defense, the company anticipates that thieves and spies will soon catch up. "I expect that we're going to see artificial intelligence used by the attackers," says Eagan, noting that there already have been "early glimpses" of that future coming to pass.
