The popular gay dating app Grindr represents a national security risk under its current Chinese ownership, according to the US government. Gaming company Beijing Kunlun Tech Co is seeking to sell the app after being told the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) has concerns about its ownership. It is understood to have told Kunlun it considers its involvement with Grindr a national security risk, although it has not been determined what specific issued it raised. We'll tell you what's true. Russia manipulates GPS signals to protect Vladimir Putin from rogue drones, report reveals

Russia has been manipulating global satellite positioning (GPS) locations on a vast scale in order to protect Vladimir Putin from drones, according to a report. The Center for Advanced Defense Studies (C4ADS), a Washington-based research organisation, undertook a year-long investigation ending in November 2018 into the manipulation of GPS and other global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). Their report, which drew upon publicly available satellite data, found that the tactic was used in Russia, the Ukraine and Syria, with some incidents of spoofing, correlating closely with the movements of Putin. Now, thanks to a just-released software update, the latest model of Apple Watch, called Series 4, is capable of advanced heart measurements. These features have been available to Watch users in the United States for the last few months but have now been cleared by authorities in Europe as well. From today, in 19 European countries including the UK, Watch wearers can take an electrocardiogram right on their wrist. Apple has always had a strong interest in health and wellness, but the emphasis has grown in recent years and Apple Watch has been at the forefront.

Apple Watch users across Europe can now measure their heart health after Apple turned on one of the smart watch's headline new features. After being regulatory approval, the company has flipped the switch that means the watch can take electrocardiogram, or ECG, readings. The update will arrive for anyone who has the latest watch as well as being updated to the most recent version of the software. While the technology to power the ECG feature has been present in all Series 4 Watches since they were released, Apple hasn't been able to turn it on because it has not been approved. That means a new update will be able to switch it on, without any extra work from owners.


FarmWise and Roush are making autonomous vegetable weeders

Silicon Valley startup FarmWise Labs announced today that it is teaming up with Michigan-based manufacturing and automotive company Roush to create autonomous vegetable weeders. The companies will work together over the course of the year to create prototypes for self-driving robots that will be able to navigate across crops. If all goes well, they will start to scale up with additional units in 2020. The weeding robots could prove to be a major help for Michigan farmers. The autonomous vehicles will be designed to perform high-precision weeding and thinning and will be able to operate around the clock, saving farmers from having to perform the time-sucking tasks.


Sabrewing Plans a Cargo Drone That Can Detect and Avoid Obstacles

For a pilot, there really is no substitute for knowing what's in front of you. In a drone, that capability is known as detect and avoid, and so far, no drone has cleared the bar. Sabrewing, a startup in Camarillo, Calif., may well be the first to do it. It's working on a cargo-carrying drone that's due to begin test flights in 2020. "Even the military does it only in a kind of rudimentary way, say with a camera system; our system has to provide a way for the aircraft to autonomously avoid obstacles," says Ed De Reyes, the chief executive of Sabrewing.

British-born AI expert wins Turing Award

British-born artificial intelligence (AI) expert Geoffrey Hinton has won the Turing Award, sometimes referred to as "the Nobel Prize of computing". Mr Hinton, who now lives in Canada, shares the award with Yoshua Bengio and Yann LeCun - two other proponents of deep learning, a popular form of AI. "The three of us have been the people who most believed in this approach," he told BBC News. "It's very nice to be recognised now that it is fashionable." A deep neural network uses many layers of artificial neurons, loosely mimicking the structure of animal brains. Such AI is increasingly used in products that people use every day - from smart speakers to Facebook.
