New partnerships were announced, and first joint solutions are showcased. ABB and Ericsson have strengthened their commitment to accelerate the industrial ecosystem for flexible wireless automation, which will enable enhanced connected services, industrial IoT and artificial intelligence technologies in the future.

Using artificial intelligence in health care could actually make medicine more human by giving doctors more time to interact with their patients. The technology promises to improve health care by making it more effective and speedy by eliminating some of the mundane functions that eat up doctors' time, said Eric Topol, founder and director of the nonprofit Scripps Research Translational Institute, at Fortune's Brainstorm Health conference on Tuesday in San Diego. Machine learning could free doctors from having to type medical information into patient files while also helping give patients better access to their personal data. "All that effort can then get us to what we've been missing for decades now, which is the true care in health care," Topol said. Topol's vision is the topic of his new book, Deep Medicine: How Artificial Intelligence Can Make Healthcare Human Again. To achieve this optimistic future, he said the health care industry must aggressively adopt artificial intelligence.

Though he is not a clinical doctor, Cohen is focused on the intersection of health and deep learning.

The 2018 Turing Award, known as the "Nobel Prize of computing," has been given to a trio of researchers who laid the foundations for the current boom in artificial intelligence. Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton, and Yann LeCun -- sometimes called the'godfathers of AI' -- have been recognized with the $1 million annual prize for their work developing the AI subfield of deep learning. The techniques the trio developed in the 1990s and 2000s enabled huge breakthroughs in tasks like computer vision and speech recognition. Their work underpins the current proliferation of AI technologies, from self-driving cars to automated medical diagnoses. In fact, you probably interacted with the descendants of Bengio, Hinton, and LeCun's algorithms today -- whether that was the facial recognition system that unlocked your phone, or the AI language model that suggested what to write in your last email.

PyTorch-BigGraph: Faster embeddings of large graphs

Working effectively with large graphs is crucial to advancing both the research and applications of artificial intelligence. So Facebook AI has created and is now open-sourcing PyTorch-BigGraph (PBG), a tool that makes it much faster and easier to produce graph embeddings for extremely large graphs -- in particular, multi-relation graph embeddings for graphs where the model is too large to fit in memory. PBG is faster than commonly used embedding software and produces embeddings of comparable quality to state-of-the-art models on standard benchmarks. With this new tool, anyone can take a large graph and quickly produce high-quality embeddings using a single machine or multiple machines in parallel. As an example, we are also releasing the first published embeddings of the full Wikidata graph of 50 million Wikipedia concepts, which serves as structured data for use in the AI research community.
