Distributed representation of multi-sense words: A loss-driven approach

Word2Vec's Skip Gram model is the current state-of-the-art approach for estimating the distributed representation of words. However, it assumes a single vector per word, which is not well-suited for representing words that have multiple senses. This work presents LDMI, a new model for estimating distributional representations of words. LDMI relies on the idea that, if a word carries multiple senses, then having a different representation for each of its senses should lead to a lower loss associated with predicting its co-occurring words, as opposed to the case when a single vector representation is used for all the senses. After identifying the multi-sense words, LDMI clusters the occurrences of these words to assign a sense to each occurrence. Experiments on the contextual word similarity task show that LDMI leads to better performance than competing approaches.

An Oxford mathematician explains how AI could enhance human creativity
The game of Go played between a DeepMind computer program and a human champion created an existential crisis of sorts for Marcus du Sautoy, a mathematician and professor at Oxford University. "I've always compared doing mathematics to playing the game of Go," he says, and Go is not supposed to be a game that a computer can easily play because it requires intuition and creativity. So when du Sautoy saw DeepMind's AlphaGo beat Lee Sedol, he thought that there had been a sea change in artificial intelligence that would impact other creative realms. He set out to investigate the role that AI can play in helping us understand creativity, and ended up writing The Creativity Code: Art and Innovation in the Age of AI (Harvard University Press). The Verge spoke to du Sautoy about different types of creativity, AI helping humans become more creative (instead of replacing them), and the creative fields where artificial intelligence struggles most.

Experts studied how real people use forks to feed each other in order to teach the robot the best way to go about its task. The arm automatically adjusts both the force it uses and the angle at which it spears items to best pick up and deliver mouthfuls of food - regardless of size or texture. A dexterous robot arm that can can automatically feed people forkfuls of food has been developed by researchers in the US. 'Being dependent on a caregiver to feed every bite, every day, takes away a person's sense of independence,' said roboticist Siddhartha Srinivasa. 'Our goal with this project is to give people a bit more control over their lives.'

But we might learn how it will impact cows before most humans put it to the test. In southwest England, 50 dairy cattle are now wearing high-speed smart collars that control robotic milking systems. It's both a way to test 5G's potential in agriculture and to publicize one of Cisco Systems Inc.'s rural network trials. More importantly, it's an opportunity to see how 5G might transmit data between sensors faster than a rural broadband connection. It sounds fairly straightforward: when a cow enters a milking station, its collar alerts the machine to begin pumping.
