How Machine Learning Meets Optimization - Strata Data Conference in New York 2019

Optimization and ML are increasingly intersecting. Occasionally overlapping, sometimes complementary and most often best used in combination. Data Scientists should be interested in Operations Research, and Operations Researcher's are increasingly using Machine Learning. This presentation will provide a structure for understanding and applying these two techniques. It describes when Optimization techniques originating from operations research are the better solution and when it is beneficial to apply ML. More importantly, we describe how complex, high-value business problems can be solved with better by combining the techniques, rather than by using only one of them.

Meet Team Caeliโ€“the runners-up of Imagine Cup 2019 World Championship! Nine out of 10 people in the world breathe polluted air, causing as many as seven million deaths every year, the World Health Organization estimates. The World Bank pegs these premature deaths cost the global economy USD225 billion in lost labor income in 2013. Statistics like these and their own experience living in the vicinity of New Delhi, which has one of the world's worst air quality, led five students from Manav Rachna Institute of Research & Studies in Faridabad to embark on a mission to use technology to tackle the problem. The team, comprising Aakash Bhadana, Ishlok Vashishta, Vasu Kaushik, Dipesh Narwat, and Bharat Sundal, came up with Caeli, a smart anti-pollution face mask and portable nebulizer to help those with breathing ailments like asthma and other chronic respiratory diseases.

Sonos will launch Google Assistant on its smart speakers next week

After months of beta testing, Sonos is nearly ready to roll out Google Assistant to its Sonos One and Sonos Beam smart speakers. In today's quarterly earnings letter to shareholders, Sonos CEO Patrick Spence confirmed that the company is planning to launch Assistant next week. The functionality will launch in the US initially, "with more markets to come over the next few months," said Spence. "This feature will truly elevate the customer experience and marks the first time that consumers will be able to buy a single smart speaker and get to choose which voice assistant they want to use. We think giving consumers choice is always the right decision, and we anticipate this philosophy will be adopted in the industry over time," he said.



Robots don't come cheap, but EU workers do

In his Economic Outlook last week, "Robots aren't destroying jobs -- or boosting productivity", David Smith examined the impact of artificial intelligence and robotics on UK productivity. He noted the record-high employment rate (76.1%) but also the "stubbornly high proportion of people in low-skilled jobs". Elsewhere in the article he said that in Northern Ireland, he "came across a firm that had no alternative but to automate because of the loss of EU migrant workers". It seems to me that, without spelling it out, he has put his finger on one of the main reasons for the UK's stubbornly low level of productivity. This is our attractiveness to well-educated workers from eastern Europe.

After all, social media platforms, which began as a way for friends to connect online, are today being used to radicalize terrorists and potentially swing presidential elections. The advent of lethal autonomous weapons--"killer robots" to detractors--has many analysts alarmed. Equipped with artificial intelligence, some of these weapons could, without proximate human control, select and eliminate targets with a speed and efficiency soldiers can't possibly match.

But what works for a game doesn't work for risky real-world tasks like driving a car, where "losing" might involve a high-speed collision. To drive safely, humans have an exquisite feedback system: our fight-or-flight response, in which physiological reactions like a rapid heart rate and sweaty palms signal "fear," and so keep us vigilant and, theoretically, out of trouble. Now, researchers at Microsoft are giving artificial intelligence (AI) programs a rough analog of anxiety to help them sense when they're pushing their luck. The scientists placed sensors on people's fingers to record pulse amplitude while they were in a driving simulator, as a measure of arousal.
