Indian startup RealTell launches gamification for Retailers

Offline retail is here to stay," says founder of in-store experiential service. Retail tech startup RealTell is launching its flagship product "Realtell Retail" for fashion and lifestyle brands. "Offline retail is here to stay," said Ashish Mittal, chief mentor at Turning Ideas Ventures (which incubated RealTell) "and this startup helps retailers, primarily the fashion and apparel brands, to drive footfall and increase basket size by gamifying the offline shopping experience." The company was started by two young college entrepreneurs from Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) Delhi University, Sanyam Gupta and Shivendra Misra. In a statement, the company said its kiosk solutions will help shoppers to discover new combo prices for the fashion and other retails products every day, based on artificial intelligence and machine learning, driving footfall to stores and turning the buying experience into a game. Press materials released by the brand observed that while online retailers have detailed information about shoppers – because every click can be tracked – offline retail stores lose out on valuable shopper insights due to the lack of proper infrastructure and technology. With its patented technology, RealTell Retail gamifies the shopping experience by letting shoppers discover a dynamic price for products of their choice. "Imagine walking into a store, scanning your items at a kiosk and saving money at each visit," said Misra. "What's exciting is that the prices and the offers change every day.


Researchers can now use AI and a photo to make fake videos of anyone

San Francisco (CNN)Researchers have come up with a method for creating realistic-looking -- but fake -- videos of anyone by using just a single image of them with a trained artificial intelligence system. It's a potentially worrisome capability in the runup to the 2020 United States presidential election, as falsified videos of candidates are expected to spread. Researchers at the Samsung AI Center in Moscow and the Moscow-based Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology explained the feat in a paper published this week to the arXiv, an online academic pre-print service. They said they were able to animate one or several photos of people by first training an AI system on a dataset of videos including many celebrities, so it could learn about key points on the face. After that, the AI system was able to combine that familiarity with one or more images of a person to come up with a convincing "talking head"-style video of them.

Google chief sees continuous learning as key to overcoming 'disruption anxiety'

That, in essence, is the message delivered by Google's country director for Canada, Sabrina Geremia, to participants on the last day of the C2 Montreal conference. "Disruption anxiety is in every single field," Geremia said Friday during an exchange with Jui Ramaprasad, a professor of information systems at McGill University. "Part of the anxiety is rooted in the pace of change. Right now, your life is the slowest it's ever going to be." Google's own statistics provide insights into the increasing speed of change.


Greece adopts OECD's principles on artificial intelligence Kathimerini

Greece is among the 36 member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and another six countries to sign up to the organization's Principles on Artificial Intelligence at the OECD's annual ministerial council meeting, held on Wednesday and Thursday in Paris. These five values-based principles have incorporated guidance from an expert group formed by more than 50 members from governments, academia, business, civil society, international bodies, the tech community and trade unions, and focus on the responsible deployment of trustworthy AI. "They aim to guide governments, organisations and individuals in designing and running AI systems in a way that puts people's best interests first and ensuring that designers and operators are held accountable for their proper functioning," the OECD said in a press release. "Artificial Intelligence is revolutionising the way we live and work, and offering extraordinary benefits for our societies and economies. Yet, it raises new challenges and is also fuelling anxieties and ethical concerns. This puts the onus on governments to ensure that AI systems are designed in a way that respects our values and laws, so people can trust that their safety and privacy will be paramount," said OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría.

Much of the debate on the fourth industrial revolution has revolved around the threat posed by new technologies such as AI and robotics to jobs and the human way of life. It's a debate that has often contained more hyperbole than fact, and perhaps Manpower is not the first group you would think of to try and add some sense to the debate, but that's what they've tried to do with a recent paper published to coincide with the World Economic Forum shindig in Davos. Lest we forget, Manpower was arguably the forerunner of the gig economy that is so hot today, with the company driving the temporary labor market since its foundation back in 1948. Whilst some will no doubt argue that it is therefore the devil incarnate and has spent decades eroding the hard won rights and privileges that the'future of work' seems to be largely without, it does nonetheless have a reasonably good position to oversee how the labor market is responding to the technologies of the fourth industrial revolution. They reveal that yes, employers are investing heavily in automated technology, but that they also appear to be investing heavily in human talent too.

'A.I., Captain': The Robotic Navy Ship of the Future

The swells in the middle of the North Pacific were reaching nine feet when one of two engines on the diesel-powered U.S. naval ship called Sea Hunter shut down. About 1,500 nautical miles from its home base in San Diego, the 132-foot-long craft, which had been cruising at 10 knots, couldn't send a member of its crew to check out the problem--because it didn't have a crew. Sea Hunter's sleek, spiderlike silhouette, with a narrow hull and two outriggers, is a prototype of what could be a new class of autonomous warships for the U.S. Navy. Its artificial intelligence–based controls and navigation system, designed by Leidos Holdings, a defense contractor based in Reston, Va., were seven years in the making. And this maiden voyage--a more than 4,000-mile roundtrip to the giant Pearl Harbor naval station--was its first major proof of concept. Nothing like this had ever been attempted before.
