Hideki Nagafuji, a 42-year-old former Osaka Prefectural Assembly member, defeated two other contenders. Voter turnout stood at 40.83 percent. The regional party's so-called Osaka metropolis plan calls for reorganizing the prefectural capital of Osaka into special wards. In April, the party won the Osaka prefectural and mayoral elections. Nagafuji collected 137,862 votes, against 123,771 votes garnered by Tomoaki Nomura, 45, a former Sakai Municipal Assembly member, and 14,110 votes by Takashi Tachibana, 51, a former assembly member for Katsushika Ward, Tokyo.

"We will work constructively with other WTO members to undertake necessary WTO reform with a sense of urgency," the statement said. Hiroshige Seko, minister of economy, trade and industry, said that it is significant that specifics concerning WTO reform were included in a G20 ministerial statement for the first time. Improving the organization's system for resolving disputes was one of the issues raised. "We agree that action is necessary regarding the functioning of the dispute settlement system consistent with the rules as negotiated by the WTO members," the statement said. Foreign Minister Taro Kono said it was a "big feat" for Japan, which places importance on this issue, that the need to address the system was explicitly mentioned in the statement.

Amazon conference showcases robots and social uses of artificial intelligence

At Amazon's inaugural re:MARS conference, an autonomous mower on display cut straight lines in grass as it scooted back and forth across an artificial lawn on Thursday. The gray, cylindrical Terra robot by iRobot, maker of the Roomba vacuum, was one of many automated machines demonstrated at the event at Las Vegas's Aria resort. Another robot called Temi blasted pop music while, like a faithful pet, it followed a person around the spacious convention center. Thousands of tech fans descended on the Mojave desert for the conference, a public offshoot of Amazon Chairman Jeff Bezos' previous invitation-only MARS conferences (the acronym stands for "Machine Learning, Robotics, Automation and Space"). In dozens of breakout sessions, business leaders discussed the future of jobs, drones, and tools powered by Amazon's cloud platform in fields ranging from space exploration to health care.


Realeyes raises $12.4 million to help brands detect emotion using AI on facial expressions

Artificial emotional intelligence, or "emotion AI," is emerging as a key component of the broader AI movement. The general idea is this: It's all very well having machines that can understand and respond to natural-language questions, and even beat humans at games, but until they can decipher non-verbal cues such as vocal intonations, body language, and facial expressions, humans will always have the upper hand in understanding other humans. And it's against that backdrop that countless companies are working toward improving computer vision and voice analysis techniques, to help machines detect the intricate and finely balanced emotions of a flesh-and-bones homo sapiens. One of those companies is Realeyes, a company that helps big brands such as AT&T, Mars, Hershey's, and Coca-Cola gauge human emotions through desktop computers' and mobile devices' cameras. The London-based startup, which was founded in 2007, today announced a fresh $12.4 million round of funding from Draper Esprit, the VC arm of Japanese telecom giant NTT Docomo, Japanese VC fund Global Brain, Karma Ventures, and The Entrepreneurs Fund.


How AI could tackle a problem shared by a billion people

Earlier this month, Google AI Impact Challenge grantees from around the world gathered in San Francisco to start applying artificial intelligence to address some of the world's toughest problems, from protecting rainforests to improving emergency response times. In addition to receiving part of the $25 million pool of funding from Google.org, each organization is participating in a six-month program called the Launchpad Accelerator. The accelerator kicked off with a week-long boot camp which included mentorship, workshops, presentations from AI and product experts and an opportunity to connect with other grantees. They also received support and guidance from DataKind, a global non-profit dedicated to harnessing the power of data science and AI in the service of humanity. Throughout the accelerator, grantees will receive ongoing support and coaching from their Google mentors as they complete the first phase of their projects. We sat down with Rajesh Jain from grantee Wadhwani AI, an Indian organization with a project dedicated to using AI to help farmers with pest control, to learn more about the problem he and his team are setting out to solve, and how support from Google will help them get there.

LOS ANGELES – Microsoft just started the console war – and the Master Chief is leading the way. The software and video game giant plans to bring a new video game console, currently codenamed "Project Scarlett," to market in time for holiday 2020. And it will have a new game "Halo Infinite" on tap for the new console's launch. In announcing the plans at the Electronic Entertainment Expo here Sunday, Phil Spencer, Microsoft's head of Xbox, called it "the most powerful and highest performing console we have ever designed." Whereas past succeeding generations of consoles provided a difference in graphic fidelity, Project Scarlett, Spencer said has a leap in processing power "you can see and feel."
