Governance by Glass-Box: Implementing Transparent Moral Bounds for AI Behaviour

Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications are being used to predict and assess behaviour in multiple domains, such as criminal justice and consumer finance, which directly affect human well-being. However, if AI is to improve people's lives, then people must be able to trust AI, which means being able to understand what the system is doing and why. Even though transparency is often seen as the requirement in this case, realistically it might not always be possible or desirable, whereas the need to ensure that the system operates within set moral bounds remains. In this paper, we present an approach to evaluate the moral bounds of an AI system based on the monitoring of its inputs and outputs. We place a "glass box" around the system by mapping moral values into explicit verifiable norms that constrain inputs and outputs, in such a way that if these remain within the box we can guarantee that the system adheres to the value. The focus on inputs and outputs allows for the verification and comparison of vastly different intelligent systems; from deep neural networks to agent-based systems. The explicit transformation of abstract moral values into concrete norms brings great benefits in terms of explainability; stakeholders know exactly how the system is interpreting and employing relevant abstract moral human values and calibrate their trust accordingly. Moreover, by operating at a higher level we can check the compliance of the system with different interpretations of the same value. These advantages will have an impact on the well-being of AI systems users at large, building their trust and providing them with concrete knowledge on how systems adhere to moral values.

A defence company has invented a new futuristic'rifle' that stops rogue drones by hacking into them - and forcing them to fly back to their pilots. DroneShield has developed a software similar to'Google Maps' for drones that instantly locates any drones - and sends them back to their pilots. The firm has previously worked with the British Army and provided assistance to the 2018 Korean Winter Olympics, and their tech is in use at airports. CEO Oleg Vornik remains tight-lipped on the exact cost of the system, but confirmed it ranges from five to seven figures. Mr Vornik also says the system could be used to protect airports from drone incursions - such as the one that brought chaos to Gatwick Airport, bringing it to a standstill for 33 hours before Christmas.

Max Pechyonkin, a deep learning engineer and dean of the China School of AI, an AI-focused education program, spoke at the Emerge by TechNode conference in Shanghai in May about his work in teaching people the fundamentals of an omnipresent technology that is vastly misunderstood. "If you use a smartphone, you are using AI everyday," he said, including any app with a content recommendation feature. The technology has become so ubiquitous that its very definition has changed, he said.

He helped create an app called Endel, which is self-described as "a cross-platform audio ecosystem." 2 Endel is part of a larger part of the current hot debate over works of art being "created" by computers using programs employing "artificially intelligent" modes of computer learning, or AI for short. "Dmitry Evgrafov, Endel's composer and head of sound design, says all 600 tracks were made'with a click of a button.' There was minimal human involvement outside of chopping up the audio and mastering it for streaming. Endel even hired a third-party company to write the track titles." 3 What makes this notable is that Endel has a record deal with Warner Bros. Music. 4 "Five Endel albums have already been released, and 15 more are coming this year -- all of which will be generated by code. In the future, Endel will be able to make infinite ambient tracks." 5 But didn't the Endel engineers create the software in question?
Revisiting the Jobs Artificial Intelligence Will Create
This audio conversation digs into research on the emerging job categories spurred by AI and what leaders should be thinking about next. MIT SMR editor in chief Paul Michelman recently spoke with authors Paul Daugherty and H. James Wilson to discuss the research that went into their (and coauthor Nicola Morini Bianzino's) 2017 article "The Jobs That Artificial Intelligence Will Create" and to find out what new developments in this space have their attention. This article is part of an MIT SMR initiative exploring how technology is reshaping the practice of management. A major focus of the Daugherty and Wilson article is what kinds of skills will enable job transformation in the age of AI. Surprisingly, they've found that STEM skills, while important, are certainly not a prerequisite for transformation. In fact, their research shows that four soft skills are becoming much more valuable as human-machine collaboration advances. These skills include complex reasoning, creativity, social and emotional intelligence, and sensory perception. Get periodic email updates on how to incorporate new tech into your company's strategy and operations. Humans have never trained for many of the new jobs that AI will create -- so the question becomes, how do companies develop their workforce? Daugherty and Wilson cite the importance of experiential learning through hands-on apprenticeships and using technology to advance skills in new categories of jobs. In addition, the burden for skilling and reskilling must shift from the individual employee to the collective institution or organization.
