Can crime be predicted with AI/ML?
For many years, AI/ML has been used to establish the identity of perpetrators, the perpetrators' whereabouts at the time of a criminal act and their actions and whereabouts prior to and following a criminal act. By hand, these are arduous tasks but AI categorization sifting through massive amounts of visual data along with ML behavior scripts AI/ML algorithms can eliminate human errors especially in witness identification and therefore increasing arrest accuracy. "Predictive policing" is the practice of identifying the date, times and locations where specific crimes are most likely to occur, then scheduling officers to patrol those areas in hopes of preventing crimes from taking place, therefore keeping neighborhoods safer. After much research and input from major police departments in cooperation with software suppliers, predictive analytic models have been continuously refined. A profile matrix can be constructed from a database containing known associates, possible DNA found at the scene, gunshot detection, etc.
Engineers use graph networks to accurately predict properties of molecules and crystals

Nanoengineers at the University of California San Diego have developed new deep learning models that can accurately predict the properties of molecules and crystals. By enabling almost instantaneous property predictions, these deep learning models provide researchers the means to rapidly scan the nearly-infinite universe of compounds to discover potentially transformative materials for various technological applications, such as high-energy-density Li-ion batteries, warm-white LEDs, and better photovoltaics. To construct their models, a team led by nanoengineering professor Shyue Ping Ong at the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering used a new deep learning framework called graph networks, developed by Google DeepMind, the brains behind AlphaGo and AlphaZero. Graph networks have the potential to expand the capabilities of existing AI technology to perform complicated learning and reasoning tasks with limited experience and knowledge--something that humans are good at.
Israel adds artificial intelligence tech for SPICE bomb
Rafael, an Israeli defence firm, on Monday announced it had successfully demonstrated a new "automatic target recognition" capability that relies on artificial intelligence and machine learning for the newest variant of its SPICE family of guided air-to-ground bombs. The Indian Air Force is believed to have used SPICE bombs in its attack on a Jaish-e-Mohammed camp in Balakot in February. SPICE is an acronym for Smart, Precise, Impact and Cost-Effective. The SPICE munitions come in three variants: SPICE-2000, -1000 and -250, with the number denoting the weapon's weight class in pounds. The SPICE-250, which weighs around 113kg and the newest variant of the SPICE family, was the version tested with artificial intelligence technology by Rafael.
Research: AI is a 'welcome boost' that could add millions to GDP
New research from McKinsey and Quantumblack suggests UK businesses adopting AI could see their value increase by 120 percent within a decade. AI overall could provide a 22 percent GDP boost worth millions to the UK economy, according to the research. However, the report warns that firms which do not integrate AI into their day-to-day business risk around 20 percent of their cash flow today. "By 2030, the average simulation shows that some 70 percent of companies might have adopted at least one type of AI technology but that less than half will have fully absorbed the five categories [computer vision, natural language, virtual assistants, robotic process automation, and advanced machine learning]." The UK is well-positioned to take advantage of AI and is the highest ranking country in Europe on McKinsey Global Institute's AI Readiness Index.

AMIA calls on FDA to refine its AI regulatory framework
The American Medical Informatics Association wants the Food and Drug Administration to improve its conceptual approach to regulating medical devices that leverage self-updating artificial intelligence algorithms. The FDA sees tremendous potential in healthcare for AI algorithms that continually evolve--called "adaptive" or "continuously learning" algorithms--that don't need manual modification to incorporate learning or updates. While AMIA supports an FDA discussion paper on the topic released in early April, the group is calling on the agency to make further refinements to the Proposed Regulatory Framework for Modifications to Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML)-Based Software as a Medical Device (SaMD). "Properly regulating AI and machine learning-based SaMD will require ongoing dialogue between FDA and stakeholders," said AMIA President and CEO Douglas Fridsma, MD, in a written statement. "This draft framework is only the beginning of a vital conversation to improve both patient safety and innovation. We certainly look forward to continuing it."

E3 2019: Nintendo teases Animal Crossing and a Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel
In a Nintendo Direct broadcast today, the Japanese video game giant laid out the lineup for its Switch console for the rest of 2019 and early 2020. Introduced by newly installed Nintendo of America executive Doug Bowser โ no, not that Bowser โ it was light on surprises, but the highlights were a new Animal Crossing game, New Horizons, and a teaser for the sequel to the phenomenally accomplished The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Nintendo's E3 2019 presentation was dominated by giants of the Japanese video game world โ not just Nintendo's own Pokรฉmon, Smash Bros, Animal Crossing and Zelda series, but Square Enix's Dragon Quest and Mana roleplaying series and a range of anime-styled and mech-themed games. A definitive edition of Dragon Quest XI and stylish mech battler Daemon X Machina will both be out in September, and old-school Sega series Panzer Dragoon makes an unexpected return on Switch this winter. Tongue-in-cheek action game No More Heroes 3, from Tokyo's Grasshopper Manufacture, was also announced for 2020.

Spending on video games and related equipment reached an all-time high last year, with Americans shelling out $42 billion to immerse themselves in virtual worlds where they can steal cars, shoot cowboys, and fight Nazis with abandon. But as tens of thousands of video game fans and creators gather in Los Angeles this week for the Electronic Entertainment Expo, more commonly known as E3, a difficult truth about the gaming industry is beginning to emerge: what's seen by outsiders as a fun, creative business is becoming psychologically and financially unbearable for those working in it. "Every game you like is built on the backs of workers," says Nathan Allen Ortega, 34, who thought he found his dream job when Telltale Games offered him a position as a community and video manager in 2015. Ortega was such a Telltale enthusiast that he used to participate in cosplay--the practice of dressing up as a particular character for events--as Rhys Strongfork, one of the main heroes in the company's Tales from the Borderlands. So it was an easy decision to pack up his stuff in Texas and relocate near the company's headquarters in San Rafael, California.

Ah, the Electronics Entertainment Expo, or E3 for short -- that time of the year when the video game industry gathers to tell us all about the incredible games and projects it's working on. From a Breath of the Wild sequel to Keanu Reeves taking the stage and calling us all "breathtaking," this year's E3 has been a whirlwind of stellar moments and exciting announcements. The biggest moment and the coolest game of E3 came courtesy of Polish developer CD Projekt Red's first-person shooter RPG, Cyberpunk 2077. Set in Night City, California, Cyberpunk 2077 is an open world sandbox where players fight against evil mega-corporations using body augmentation. That's cool, but CD Projekt Red delivered the best moment of E3 when it revealed Keanu Reeves is in the game.
