Benefitfocus, Inc. (BNFT), a leading cloud-based benefits management platform and services provider, today announced it will present findings and recommendations from its recent Consumer Benefits Coverage Index report at the SHRM Annual Conference & Exposition. Agency plus automation: Designing artificial intelligence into interactive systems
Much contemporary rhetoric regards the prospects and pitfalls of using artificial intelligence techniques to automate an increasing range of tasks, especially those once considered the purview of people alone. These accounts are often wildly optimistic, understating outstanding challenges while turning a blind eye to the human labor that undergirds and sustains ostensibly "automated" services. This long-standing focus on purely automated methods unnecessarily cedes a promising design space: one in which computational assistance augments and enriches, rather than replaces, people's intellectual work. This tension between human agency and machine automation poses vital challenges for design and engineering. In this work, we consider the design of systems that enable rich, adaptive interaction between people and algorithms. We seek to balance the often-complementary strengths and weaknesses of each, while promoting human control and skillful action. We share case studies of interactive systems we have developed in three arenas--data wrangling, exploratory analysis, and natural language translation--that integrate proactive computational support into interactive systems. To improve outcomes and support learning by both people and machines, we describe the use of shared representations of tasks augmented with predictive models of human capabilities and actions. We conclude with a discussion of future prospects and scientific frontiers for intelligence augmentation research. Although sharing overlapping origins in midcentury computer science, research programs in intelligence augmentation (IA; using computers to extend people's ability to process information and reason about complex problems) and artificial intelligence (AI; developing computational methods for perception, reasoning, and action) have to date charted largely separate trajectories.

The clip, created by comedian Jordan Peele, foreshadowed challenges that have now become all too real. These days, tech firms, media companies and consumers are all routinely forced to make determinations about whether content is authentic or fake -- and it's increasingly hard to tell the difference. Deepfakes are videos and images that have been digitally manipulated to depict people saying and doing things that never happened. Most deepfakes use artificial intelligence to alter video and to generate authentic-sounding audio.

NASA is investing in technology that could help mine asteroids and the moon for precious resources
NASA says its presence on the moon won't just be for show. With new technology, the agency hopes to mine natural resources on the lunar surface as well as reachable asteroids. Through NASA's Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program, the agency said it will begin to explore the feasibility of robotic rovers and mining technology that could make space mining a reality. To do so, it has green-lit two mission concepts this month. NASA wants to get a jump-start on mining in space with a tandem of proposals that would develop future technology.

LOS ANGELES -- Coming soon to a Tesla screen near you: A racing game that uses the car's steering wheel. This came straight from avid gamer and Tesla CEO Elon Musk at the E3 video game expo in Los Angeles. "I mean, if you have a racing game and you have a steering wheel...it's sitting right there, waiting to be steered," Musk said. Though he did not announce when the game, "Beach Buggy Racing 2," would be available, he said that along with the steering wheel, the brake would also be wired into the game.

At the Computex event in Taiwan, NVIDIA unveiled EGX, a multi-cloud and AI-enabled edge computing platform for enterprises. NVIDIA EGX is a unified edge computing stack that can span from the tiny Jetson Nano to a full rack of T4 servers. Customers can start small with EGX and gradually scale to support full-blown GPUs. NVIDIA is optimizing the software stack to power devices such as drones to dedicated servers that can handle AI inferencing at scale. NVIDIA Edge Stack is an optimized platform powered by NVIDIA drivers, a CUDA Kubernetes plugin, a CUDA container runtime, CUDA-X libraries and containerized AI frameworks and applications such as TensorRT, TensorRT Inference Server and DeepStream SDK.
