Transmedia Storytelling Initiative launches with $1.1 million gift
Driven by the rise of transformative digital technologies and the proliferation of data, human storytelling is rapidly evolving in ways that challenge and expand our very understanding of narrative. Transmedia -- where stories and data operate across multiple platforms and social transformations -- and its wide range of theoretical, philosophical, and creative perspectives, needs shared critique around making and understanding. MIT's School of Architecture and Planning (SA P), working closely with faculty in the MIT School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (SHASS) and others across the Institute, has launched the Transmedia Storytelling Initiative under the direction of Professor Caroline Jones, an art historian, critic, and curator in the History, Theory, Criticism section of SA P's Department of Architecture. The initiative will build on MIT's bold tradition of art education, research, production, and innovation in media-based storytelling, from film through augmented reality. Supported by a foundational gift from David and Nina Fialkow, this initiative will create an influential hub for pedagogy and research in time-based media.

The Global Push to Advance AI
While different nations often see matters of national policy in very different terms, there are times of nearly universal agreement. That's the case today when it comes to commitments to fuel the advancement of artificial intelligence. Governments around the world agree on the importance of investing in AI initiatives. This point is underscored in a recent report by McKinsey Global Institute. The briefing notes that China and the United States are leaders in AI-related research activities and investments, followed by a second group of countries that includes Germany, Japan, Canada and the United Kingdom.
AI-enabled enterprise starts with education, not tech
Jordan pointed to AI Magazine and O'Reilly Media's artificial intelligence newsletter as two "simple examples" of how CIOs can incorporate AI education into their daily routines and that of their teams. She described this as just "a sprinkling," but said the reading material can encourage discussions about artificial intelligence and how its resurgence might affect the future of the company. Reading up on AI could be worthwhile even for the smallest organizations, according to Jordan. "It no longer requires a multimillion-dollar budget to get AI started in your organization," she said. Take mergers and acquisitions, which require advisors to monitor and analyze disparate and often siloed data sources such as patent filings or regulatory findings.

A new way to assess AI bias in object-recognition systems
Delivering the benefits of artificial intelligence to everyone requires creating systems that work well for everyone. At F8 2019, we highlighted Facebook AI's range of systems and processes currently in production for developing inclusive AI and addressing labeling bias, algorithmic bias, and intervention bias. These efforts help ensure our computer vision (CV) systems work well for all skin tones, for example, and allow our augmented reality effects to serve everyone regardless of facial features, hairstyle, or other factors. But creating fair and unbiased AI systems will require mitigating other forms of potential bias as well, so today, Facebook AI researchers have published the first systematic study that measures the accuracy of object-recognition systems for different communities across the world. Events such as weddings or commonly used household items (dish soap, for instance) can look very different in different places, so CV systems trained with data predominantly from one region may not perform as well when classifying images from somewhere else.
Experts: Spy used AI-generated face to connect with targets
Katie Jones sure seemed plugged into Washington's political scene. The 30-something redhead boasted a job at a top think tank and a who's-who network of pundits and experts, from the centrist Brookings Institution to the right-wing Heritage Foundation. She was connected to a deputy assistant secretary of state, a senior aide to a senator and the economist Paul Winfree, who is being considered for a seat on the Federal Reserve. But Katie Jones doesn't exist, The Associated Press has determined. Instead, the persona was part of a vast army of phantom profiles lurking on the professional networking site LinkedIn.
Scandinavian AI Strategies 2019
Mika Lintilä the Minister of Economic Affairs in Finland appointed a steering group in May 2017 to figure out how they could become one of the world's top countries within the field of Applied AI. In October 2017, Finland was the first European Union country to put a national action plan on AI into writing. This seems quite a lot earlier than most other countries in Scandinavia. At around that time they were scheduled to release their final report April 2019. However they also released a report at the time called Finland's Age of Artificial Intelligence that touched upon their strengths and weaknesses in AI with eight specific recommendations to turn the country into a global leader.
£18.5 million to boost diversity in AI tech roles and innovation in online training for adults
The technology sector is set to benefit from a £18.5 million cash injection to drive up skills in AI and data science and support more adults to upskill and retrain to progress in their careers or find new employment. Up to 2,500 people will have the opportunity to retrain and become experts in data science and artificial intelligence (AI), thanks to a £13.5 million investment to fund new degree and Masters conversion courses and scholarships at UK academic institutions over the next three years. The ground-breaking Adult Learning Technology Innovation Fund, which will be launched in partnership with innovation foundation Nesta, will provide funding and expertise to incentivise tech firms to harness new technologies to develop bespoke, flexible, inclusive, and engaging online training opportunities to support more people into skilled employment. Companies across the tech sector already employ more than 2.1 million people, contribute £184 billion to the economy every year and inward investment to the UK AI sector stood at £1 billion for 2018, which is more than Germany, France, Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland combined. To further strengthen the sector, Government is investing in data-driven technologies, such as artificial intelligence, through the modern Industrial Strategy, so tech businesses and people with the drive and talent can succeed.
