Keeping an Eye on Artificial Intelligence Regulation and Legislation
More and more organizations are beginning to use or expand their use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and services in the workplace. Despite AI's proven potential for enhancing efficiency and decision-making, it has raised a host of issues in the workplace which, in turn, have prompted an array of federal and state regulatory efforts that are likely to increase in the near future. Artificial intelligence, defined very simply, involves machines performing tasks in a way that is intelligent. The AI field involves a number of subfields or forms of AI that solve complex problems associated with human intelligence--for example, machine learning (computers using data to make predictions), natural-language processing (computers processing and understanding a natural human language like English), and computer vision or image recognition (computers processing, identifying, and categorizing images based on their content). One area where AI is becoming increasingly prevalent is in talent acquisition and recruiting.
UVA Scientists Use Machine Learning to Improve Gut Disease Diagnosis
Machines use Google-type algorithms on biopsy images to help children get treatment faster. A study published in the open access journal JAMA Open Network today by scientists at the University of Virginia schools of Engineering and Medicine says machine learning algorithms applied to biopsy images can shorten the time for diagnosing and treating a gut disease that often causes permanent physical and cognitive damage in children from impoverished areas. In places where sanitation, potable water and food are scarce, there are high rates of children suffering from environmental enteric dysfunction, a disease that limits the gut's ability to absorb essential nutrients and can lead to stunted growth, impaired brain development and even death. The disease affects 20 percent of children under the age of 5 in low- and middle-income countries, such as Bangladesh, Zambia and Pakistan, but it also affects some children in rural Virginia. For Dr. Sana Syed, an assistant professor of pediatrics in the UVA School of Medicine, this project is an example of why she got into medicine.
Patients' views of wearable devices and AI in healthcare: findings from the ComPaRe e-cohort
Wearable biometric monitoring devices (BMDs) and artificial intelligence (AI) enable the remote measurement and analysis of patient data in real time. These technologies have generated a lot of "hype," but their real-world effectiveness will depend on patients' uptake. Our objective was to describe patients' perceptions of the use of BMDs and AI in healthcare. We recruited adult patients with chronic conditions in France from the "Community of Patients for Research" (ComPaRe). Participants (1) answered quantitative and open-ended questions about the potential benefits and dangers of using of these new technologies and (2) participated in a case-vignette experiment to assess their readiness for using BMDs and AI in healthcare.

On Wednesday, the Japanese luxury vehicle maker gave the universe a preview of the brand's design intentions for the distant future, releasing renderings of its first-ever space jet idea which makes an appearance in Sony's new "Men in Black: International" movie. Dubbed the QZ 618 Galactic Enforcer, the spacecraft's designers were not bound by the notions of reality, legality, practicality or factory warranties. So what you get is an out-of-this-world alien-fighter with specs you've never heard of.

Are Weights Really Important to Neural Networks?
Architecture and weights are two essential considerations for artificial neural networks. Architecture is akin to the innate human brain, and contains the neural network's initial settings such as hyperparameters, layers, node connections (or wiring), etc. Weights meanwhile are the relative strength of the different connections between nodes after model training, which can be likened to a human brain that has learned for example how to multiply numbers or speak French. As with the age-old "nature versus nurture" debate, AI researchers want to know whether architecture or weights play the main role in the performance of neural networks. In a blow to the "nurture" side, Google researchers have now demonstrated that a neural network which has not learned weights through training can still achieve satisfactory results in machine learning tasks. Google Brain researchers Adam Gaier and David Ha said their idea was inspired by precocial behaviors that have evolved in nature, explaining in a blog post: "In biology, precocial species are those whose young already possess certain abilities from the moment of birth. There is evidence to show that lizard and snake hatchlings already possess behaviors to escape from predators. Shortly after hatching, ducks are able to swim and eat on their own, and turkeys can visually recognize predators."
A member of Google's disastrous AI council says the company needs to be treated like a 'world power'
A member of Google's disbanded AI ethics council said on Wednesday that the company's enormous global influence means it needs to be treated like a world power. Joanna Bryson, an associate professor in computer science at the University of Bath, spoke about Google's short-lived AI ethics council at the CognitionX conference in London. She was joined by De Kai, a fellow former council member and AI expert at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The pair were speaking at a panel on governance and accountability in AI, and the moderator asked them to address the "elephant in the room." The Google council was disbanded in April after criticism of the appointment of Kay Coles James, the head of a right-wing thinktank who been accused of anti-LGBTQ and anti-immigrant rhetoric.
