GM/Cruise Leaks Show Them Ridiculously Behind Waymo. It's Time For Better, More Public Metrics
Last week, my colleagues at The Information published some interesting leaks from GM/Cruise, about how they are failing to meet important internal milestones (Paywall.) In particular, the report states that the forecast is that Cruise will, by the end of 2019, have a vehicle that performs at between 5% and 11% of the safety level of average human driving, when it comes to frequency of crashes. As such, Cruise will miss its 2019 goal of deploying a commercial service, though it might deploy one with safety drivers. Cruise has set milestones with many similarities to what I and others have proposed, and similar to what Waymo has been measuring. When they have a safety driver disengage, they play back the situation in simulator and see what would have happened.

It's another week, and there's another AI sales pitch to tell us all that robots can reduce workload and teach students better. That teachers aren't good enough at differentiation: robots can spot the gaps in pupils' learning more quickly and, using sophisticated algorithms, come up with instant tasks to bridge the gap and pave the way to success. Sadly, the idea that AI can cure all ills has been around too long unchallenged – except by dinosaurs like me. Bristol's Graphcore burns through $60m as it tries to bring AI chips to market
British chipmaking start-up Graphcore has burned through more than $50m (£39m) in one year as it seeks to get its AI-powered silicon chips onto the market and into data centres and driverless cars. The Bristol-based company, founded by hardware industry veterans Nigel Toon and Simon Knowles, has been spending heavily, growing its headcount and opening offices in a bid to transform its chip designs. The start-up reported revenues of $1.1m. It comes as Graphcore continues to ramp up its operations in the UK by hiring 500 new staff and open a new office in Cambridge. Thales Acquires Artificial Intelligence Company Psibernetix - Rotor & Wing International
Bolstering its capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI), France's Thales said earlier this month that it acquired Ohio-based Psibernetix, which has developed processes that enable AI decisions to be mathematically verified and validated so that Thales can create Certifiable AI that is trusted. Terms of the deal, which was announced on June 7, were not disclosed. Psibernetix' technology has been used in a wide range of applications, including defense, biomedical, shipping, manufacturing and disaster management. In the defense space, the company developed an aerial combat application called ALPHA used in red force-blue force training that consistently beat the world's best pilots in simulated combat, Thales said. Psibernetix, on its website, said that AI will enable decisions at machine speed in complex and fast-moving environments.
