Welcome to the drive-thru, AI will take your order

#artificialintelligence

Daniel McCann, founder of 5Thru, became frustrated with waiting in growing drive-thru lines -- sometimes 15 cars deep -- to buy his morning coffee. As a payments expert, he knew that payments at the window take 23 to 25 seconds to process in addition to cook times, which adds up quickly if there is a line. Instead of waiting, he would often have to forgo the drive-thru and head to the office without his caffeine fix. He thought there had to be a better way. "Drive-thrus are one of those things that are still being done today as they were 50 years ago," McCann told Restaurant Dive.

Jumping space robot can simulate a how a spacecraft flies, experts say

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A dog-like robot being developed to hop across complex terrain on other planets has been used to play a live-action game of ping pong in its latest phase of testing. Scientists mounted the SpaceBok sideways onto a free-floating platform to mimic a zero gravity environment in two dimensions. They moved themselves side to side with a panel for the robot to bounce from. A reaction wheel helps the robot stabilise itself, swivelling 180 degrees mid-jump to position its feet on to the panel and push onto the opposite side. Playing Minecraft can boost your creativity levels if you CHOOSE to play the game, say scientists

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Playing video games like Minecraft may help to get your child's creative juices flowing, new research suggests. Video games that foster creative freedom can increase creativity under certain conditions, according to a study from Iowa State University (ISU). Their experiment compared the effect of playing Minecraft, with or without instruction, to watching a TV show or playing a race car video game. AI made from a sheet of glass can recognise numbers just by looking

New Scientist

Zongfu Yu at the University of Wisconsinโ€“Madison and his colleagues have created a glass artificial intelligence that uses light to recognise and distinguish between images. What's more, the glass AI doesn't need to be powered to operate. The proof-of-principle glass AI that Yu's team created can distinguish between handwritten single digit numbers. It can also recognise, in real time, when a number it is presented with changes โ€“ for instance, when a 3 is altered to an 8. The AI works by taking advantage of small bubbles deliberately incorporated into the glass, as well as embedded impurities such as graphene. As the light waves reflected off the handwritten numbers pass through the glass AI, they are bent in specific ways by the bubbles and impurities.

The Kyoto, Japan-headquartered game company, which until now has produced all Nintendo Switch consoles in China, said the move was not because of concern for potential U.S. tariffs on products made in China.
