GSK hires computational drug design expert Dr Kim Branson as new head of machine learning and AI
British multinational GlaxoSmithKline have hired computational drug design expert Dr Kim Branson as the company's new Senior Vice President, Global Head of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. In his new role, the biotech veteran will oversee projects which use AI to identify novel targets for potential medicines. Dr Branson brings to the role more than 15 years' worth of experience in biotech and academia having held positions at a number of Silicon Valley firms including Gliimpse, Lumia and Hessian Informatics. Having graduated with a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Adelaide in 1999, Dr Branson completed a PhD in Computational Drug Design at the University of Melbourne in 2003. Following graduation Dr Branson took on a role at the Australian government's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) organisation before moving to Stanford University to do postdoctoral research.
Israel sees cyber attacks by voice impersonating of senior staff - Express Computer
The Israel National Cyber Directorate (INCD) has issued a warning of a new type of cyber attack, using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to impersonate senior company executives. In this method, instructions are given to the companies staff members to perform transactions such as money transfers, as well as malicious activity on the company's network. Recently, reports on cyber attacks of this kind were received at the operations centre of the INCD, Xinhua news agency reported. The new offensive is of the business email compromise (BEC) type -- frauds by email against commercial and government organizations to motivate employees using social engineering methods to act for the attacker"s benefit. The most common types are phishing messages and an invoicing fraud in which the attacker impersonates the vendor, submits an invoice to the company and tries to motivate an employee under time pressure to make a bank transfer, provide information or allow access to the company"s network.

Facial recognition could be used to replace swipe cards on public transport, the New South Wales government has suggested, but the opposition and digital rights groups say it would pose a risk to privacy. The transport minister, Andrew Constance, said on Tuesday he wanted commuters "in the not too distant future" to be able to board trains using only their faces, with no need for Opal cards, barriers or turnstiles. Atlantic League to debut robot umpires and allow players to steal first base
The Atlantic League, an independent baseball league, is rolling out a new revolutionary rule and will debut robot umpires to start the second half of the season. On Wednesday, during the league's All-Star Game in York, Pennsylvania, robots will call balls and strikes for the first time in a professional game, according to The Washington Post. The league will also allow batters to steal first base -- yes, steal first -- on a pitch not caught cleanly, similar to a dropped third strike. Except, the runner can attempt to reach first during any count. Using robots will still include a human element, however.
AI pilot 'sees' runway and lands automatically
An automatic pilot has landed a plane using image-recognition artificial intelligence to locate the runway. At large airports, systems on the ground beam up the position of the runway to guide automatic systems. But in late May a new AI tool landed a small plane carrying passengers, by "sight" alone at Austria's Diamond Aircraft airfield. One expert said it could potentially improve flight safety. The new system, developed by researchers at the technical universities of Braunschweig and Munich, processes visual data of the runway and then adjusts the plane's flight controls, without human assistance.

OpenAI conducts an enormous amount of research in AI subfields from computer vision to natural language processing (NLP). The San Francisco-based firm -- which was cofounded by CTO Greg Brockman, chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, and others with a $1 billion in backing from luminaries like LinkedIn cofounder Reid Hoffman and Y Combinator chairman Sam Altman -- last year detailed an AI robotics system capable of human-like dexterity.
