Last week, a video went viral on social media around the world. It shows a robotic arm picking up a bowling ball, spinning its arm around, and hurling the ball down the lane at speed, sending all the bowling pins flying. It soon emerged that the very real-looking video was in fact fake, the work of a motion graphics designer who had hash-tagged it with words such as animation, rendering and CGI to indicate that it was computer-generated, before sharing on social media. Nonetheless, from the reactions it was clear that not everyone picked up the clues; many if not most people thought it was real. The impossibility of distinguishing between fake and real in images and videos is an everyday occurrence now, something we just have to live with.
From tracking poachers to boosting donations, AI works for social good
January 31, 2019Disaster relief, remote-healthcare diagnostics, tracking rhino poachers, upping student achievement--each of these disparate activities could get a big boost from artificial intelligence (AI). A recent discussion paper from the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI), "Notes from the AI frontier: Applying AI for social good," lays out just how AI can help tackle some of the world's most challenging social problems, analyzing 160 use cases. The good news: about one-third are already being used today. Still, there's much more that can be done, both to implement these solutions and to fully understand the breadth of what they can do for social-good organizations. We gathered questions about this topic from our social-media audience around the globe for Michael Chui, an MGI partner based in McKinsey's San Francisco office and one of the report's authors.

The spinal cord is the vital link between the brain and body, a superhighway of life-critical information protected by the bony vertebra of the spinal column. The spinal column is the most common site for bone metastasis, when tumors spread from internal organs to the bones. Estimates indicate that at least 30% and as many as 70% of patients with cancer will experience spread of cancer to their spine. Each year, about 10,000 Americans develop primary or metastatic spinal cord tumors. "The spine is a place where people can miss lesions, especially very small metastases, which could be the difference between finding an early, treatable tumor and finding a tumor too late to be treatable," says Dr. Michael Fanariotis, chief radiologist for CT at the Telemark Hospital in Skien, Norway. About 6% of CT exams is dedicated to spine imaging, but many more exams benefit from information observed within the vertebral bodies and the discs between them.
