Government puts £12m into AI-powered vacuum cleaners and dolphin-protection tech

The government is investing £12m in the development of new technologies including robots that can perform household tasks and products to protect dolphins from noise protection. The money is being invested by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in four partnerships between universities and the private sector. Government funding is being supplemented by a further £17.5m in cash from commercial partners. The first project being funded involves work to develop materials that do not make noise underwater. This, the government said, will not only improve the life expectancy of dolphins, fish, and other marine creatures, but will also have a positive impact on human health.

Gartner Inc. this week published its first Magic Quadrant for the robotic process automation software market, shining a light on the leading players and key trends in the rapidly growing technology segment. RPA relates to the use of software with artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities to handle high-volume, repeatable tasks that previously required humans to perform. These tasks can include queries, calculations and maintenance of records and transactions. RPA software relies on robots that can mimic a human worker by logging into an application, entering data or calculating and completing tasks and then logging out once the task is done. The technology is believed to save companies huge amounts of time and money, so it's not much of a surprise to see Gartner estimating the market for this type of software will reach $2.4 billion a year by 2024, from just $850 million today.

Ultravioletto's Neural Mirror shows audiences an AI reflection of themselves

Visitors to a former church in the Italian city of Spoleto will encounter a mirror that uses artificial intelligence and facial recognition to build an otherworldly image of themselves. Italian design studio Ultravioletto created the Neural Mirror installation to give audiences a chance to contemplate the controversial technologies in an artistic setting. The ghostly, rainbow-coloured reflections viewers see of themselves are actually clouds of points generated through artificial intelligence. But at first glance, audiences experience the installation as a normal mirror, as it contains a mirrored film layered over OLED displays that reflects their image back at them. It is only after the facial recognition software has scanned and processed their presence -- decoding the subject's likely sex, age, race and emotional state -- that the viewer sees the AI's interpretation of them on the screen, obscuring the mirror. "Artificial intelligence extracts all of our behaviours in a shady way then transforms them into a form of wealth for corporations," Ultravioletto's art director Bruno Capezzuoli told Dezeen.

The T-shirts sold by Cross & Freckle, a New York–based fashion upstart, don't look revolutionary at first glance. They come in black or white, they're cut for a unisex fit, and they sell for $25. Each of them has a little design embroidered into the cotton that references staples of New York City life: pigeons, dollar pizza slices, subway rats. They were designed instead by a neural network, which crunched doodle data from millions of people and spit out the original art that makes up the embroidery. Cross & Freckle isn't the first company to use AI to generate art--people have been doing that for years.

To help identify depression early, scientists have now enhanced a technology that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to sift through the sound of your voice to gauge whether you are depressed or not. Computing science researchers from the University of Alberta in Canada have improved technology for identifying depression through vocal cues. The study, conducted by Mashrura Tasnim and Professor Eleni Stroulia, builds on past research that suggests that the timbre of our voice contains information about our mood. Using standard benchmark data sets, Tasnim and Stroulia developed a methodology that combines several Machine Learning (ML) algorithms to recognize depression more accurately using acoustic cues. A realistic scenario is to have people use an app that will collect voice samples as they speak naturally. "The app, running on the user's phone, will recognize and track indicators of mood, such as depression, over time.
