3-D imaging, AI reveal stories hidden in shells

A clam shell may be a familiar find on the beach, but its intricate curves and markings tell a rich tale. For centuries, biologists have collected, drawn, measured and compared the shells of bivalve species, pursuing knowledge about how the environment and behavior shape biodiversity. Now, University of Chicago scientists are combining high-resolution 3-D imaging with new geometric deep learning approaches to reveal a fuller version of the story hidden in shells. Prof. David Jablonski has pioneered the study of the evolution and extinction dynamics in marine life for nearly four decades. But over the last two years, his research group has moved into the third dimension, using a campus micro-CT scanner to create 3-D images of more than 3,000 shells from clams, oysters, mussels, and other members of the bivalve class collected by scientists and museums around the world.


A Decade of Accelerated Computing Augurs Well For GPUs

While accelerators have been around for some time to boost the performance of simulation and modeling applications, accelerated computing didn't gain traction for most people until the commercialization of the Tesla line of GPUs for general computing by Nvidia. This year marked the tenth annual Nvidia GPU Technology Conference (GTC). I have been to all but one starting with the inaugural event in 2009. Back then it was a much smaller group. Attendance has leaped 10X with this year's meeting attracting over 9,000 participants.


LG names Darin Graham head of its Toronto Artificial Intelligence Lab

LG Electronics has tapped Dr. Darin Graham as the head of the LG Artificial Intelligence (AI) Lab in Toronto. Graham is an expert on AI networks and will be responsible for strengthening LG's North American AI capacity through strategic partnerships with industry and academia in Canada. Previously, Graham helped establish founding operations of the Vector Institute, a world-renowned artificial intelligence research organization. Further, he brings over 20 years of experience in leading innovative projects that bring creative ideas to the market. Graham has led several international research and development programs and was pivotal in building Canada's AI ecosystem.

Do Driverless Cars Really Need Edge Computing?

Along with virtual and augmented reality and the Internet of Things, self-driving cars have been one of tech experts' go-to applications when explaining the utility of edge computing. Until not too long ago, Dean Nelson, who just left his job as head of computing infrastructure at Uber, also assumed autonomous vehicles, which can generate tens of terabytes of data per day, would shuffle much of that data to and from servers in their vicinity, relying on the processing power at the edge (and ultra-fast wireless networks) to augment their onboard computing muscle. But, after spending a few years up close and personal with the technology infrastructure that powers one of the front-running companies in the race to make driverless cars viable, he's no longer sure edge computing will play a big role. "In the last couple years I changed my mind with autonomous vehicles," Nelson said Thursday while sitting on a panel at DCD San Francisco, a data center industry conference. Earlier that day, he had announced in post on LinkedIn that he was leaving Uber to start his own consultancy and devote more time to family and the activities of Infrastructure Masons, the industry group for data center professionals he founded in 2016.
