SoFi, directed with the help of a Super Nintendo controller paired with acoustic signals, has been engineered to help researchers explore marine life more freely in depth, and help us get closer to the expansive ecosystem that blooms beyond what our naked eyes can perceive. SoFi is essentially a soft robotic fish structure that consists of a controller, Raspberry Pi, and HiFi Berry, sealed inside a water proof silicone membrane that has been cast moulded. The membrane is also filled with a mineral oil that is non conductive, and allows for equalization underwater. The Raspberry Pi receives input from controller, after which ultrasound signals are amplified for SoFi through the HiFi Berry. These amplified ultrasound signals, which are interpreted by a modem embedded within SoFi's head, controls everything from directing tail movement, pitch and depth, to the on-board camera.

Brainworks uses smartphone camera and AI to detect your heart rate, breathing

Brainworks is combining artificial intelligence and simple smartphone camera images to automatically detect someone's heart rate or breathing rate. And that's just one of the avenues the Emeryville, California-based company is pursuing in its work to use intelligent ambient biometric sensors to improve health care. Brainworks CEO Phillip Alvelda spoke at our VB Transform AI event on Thursday, and he demoed the technology in real time, both onstage and in an interview. He said health care should be more preventative than reactive. With that in mind, the company's technology is contactless and always-on, though it only works if users have opted in for the constant monitoring, which -- unlike most medical equipment -- is physically non-invasive. That's particularly important when it comes to monitoring the heartbeat of a premature baby, whose skin is so sensitive it can be harmed by patches and wires associated with vital sign monitors.


Intel's Neuromorphic System Hits 8 Million Neurons, 100 Million Coming by 2020

At the DARPA Electronics Resurgence Initiative Summit today in Detroit, Intel plans to unveil an 8-million-neuron neuromorphic system comprising 64 Loihi research chips--codenamed Pohoiki Beach. Loihi chips are built with an architecture that more closely matches the way the brain works than do chips designed to do deep learning or other forms of AI. For the set of problems that such "spiking neural networks" are particularly good at, Loihi is about 1,000 times as fast as a CPU and 10,000 times as energy efficient. The new 64-Loihi system represents the equivalent of 8-million neurons, but that's just a step to a 768-chip, 100-million-neuron system that the company plans for the end of 2019. Intel and its research partners are just beginning to test what massive neural systems like Pohoiki Beach can do, but so far the evidence points to even greater performance and efficiency, says Mike Davies, director of neuromorphic research at Intel.


Researchers release the first vaccine fully developed by AI program

A team of researchers at Flinders University in South Australia has created a vaccine that is considered to be the first human drug to be fully designed by artificial intelligence. Drugs have been previously designed with the help of computers. However, this vaccine was independently designed by an AI software known as SAM or Search Algorithm for Ligands. Nikolai Petrovsky, professor at Flinders University who also led the development said that its name has been derived from the task it was assigned to perform which was searching the universe for all possible compounds for a good human drug also known as a ligand. Petrovsky, also a Research Director for an Australian company, Vaxine added that the AI software was first taught about the set of compounds which activate the immune system in human beings and a set of compounds which do not.


Digital Assistants Transforming Public Service - AI Trends

Digital assistants have become a major trend in government at every level and across geographies, and could soon be a mainstay in many state and federal agencies in the U.S. Recent favorable signs include an executive order launching the American AI Initiative and the Health and Human Services Department awarding 57 spots on its Intelligent Automation/Artificial Intelligence (AI) contract, according to natural language processing (NLP) expert William Meisel, president of TMA Associates. Speaking at the AI World Government conference, held last month in Washington, D.C., Meisel says digital assistants (aka "intelligent" or "virtual" assistants) are among the most developed and least risky ways to implement AI--and "the closest to what we see in sci-fi." Digital assistants are broadly applicable across departments and agencies looking to cut costs and boost human productivity and have a minimum probability of failure and unintended consequences. For a citizenry looking for answers, they're also a "nice alternative to automated systems and long hold times," he adds. Juniper Research reports that, by 2023, one-quarter of the populace will be using digital voice assistants daily, says Meisel.

At the 2019 Semicon Conference Applied Materials (AMAT) had a day-long seminar focused on technology, particularly memory, for artificial intelligence (AI) applications. In addition to talks by AI experts, the company also talked about their tools for manufacturing magnetic random access memory (MRAM) as well as resistive random access memory (RRAM) and Phase Change Memory (PCM). We will talk about a workshop at Stanford in August will explore emerging memories enabling artificial intelligence, especially for embedded products, such as IoT devices. Gary Dickerson from Applied Materials gave a kick-off talk at the seminar. He talked about the growth of data and the importance of memory to support data centers as well as the edge.


Britain's £50 Note Will Honor Computing Pioneer Alan Turing

"The strength of the shortlist is testament to the U.K.'s incredible scientific contribution," Sarah John, the Bank of England's chief cashier, said in a statement. The bank plans to put the new note into circulation by the end of 2021. Bank of England bills feature Queen Elizabeth's face on one side, and a notable figure from British history on the other. Scientists previously honored in this way include Newton, Darwin and the electrical pioneer Michael Faraday. The current £50 features James Watt, a key figure in the development of the steam engine, and Matthew Boulton, the industrialist who backed him.
