One Language Model to Rule Them All
Natural language understanding(NLU) is one of the richest areas in deep learning which includes highly diverse tasks such as reaching comprehension, question-answering or machine translation. Traditionally, NLU models focus on solving only of those tasks and are useless when applied to other NLU-domains. Also, NLU models have mostly evolved as supervised learning architectures that require expensive training exercises. Recently, researchers from OpenAI challenged both assumptions in a paper that introduces a single unsupervised NLU model that is able to achieve state-of-the-art performance in many NLU tasks. The idea of using unsupervised learning for different NLU tasks has been gaining traction in the last few months.

Now AI is starting to show up in intensive care units, where hospitals treat their sickest patients. Doctors who have used the new systems say AI may be better at responding to the vast trove of medical data collected from ICU patients -- and may help save patients who are teetering between life and death. "Critical care is essentially this interface between humans and technology," says Peter Laussen, chief of critical care medicine at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children. "The amount of data streaming from the patient in the ICU is huge," encompassing readings of blood pressure, heartbeat, oxygen levels and other vital signs.

A new map produced by the digital rights nonprofit Fight for the Future illustrates just how pervasive facial recognition technology is across the country: an overwhelming number of red stars on the map indicate where local and state police are using facial recognition, including in Detroit, Michigan; Lincoln, Nebraska; and Albuquerque, New Mexico. You can toggle on and off to see the map pins for each of the groups using the technology, which include police departments (both city and state), as well as airports that use facial recognition and cities that are starting to mobilize against the technology. Facial recognition has become one of the most hotly debated technologies today because of how inaccurate it is, particularly among brown and black people--the ones who are often the target of police surveillance. There is a great deal of public concern about deepfakes, most of it centered on the ramifications of being able to quickly and easily face-swap videos. Voice-swapping has already been put to use in at least a handful of artificial intelligence (AI) cyber attacks on businesses, enabling attackers to gain access to corporate networks and convince employees to authorize a money transfer. The primary use of deepfake audio is to enhance a very common type of attack โ business email compromise (BEC). A business email compromise attack usually begins with some sort of phishing to gain access to the company network and reconnoiter the payment systems.
