Speech recognition or machine translation have entered the lives of millions of people but, to make the machine learning (ML) algorithms behind them work better, it takes a lot of annotated and structured data. One way to get this data is by creating your own using specialized tools, an approach for which Christophe Rรฉ coined the term'Data Programming'. We now compare corpora annotated by hand and by humans as'Gold Standard' with'Silver Standard' data created semi-automatically by artificial means. While Rรฉ's group has produced its own set of tools to do this (called'Snorkel'), we decided to address the problem from the angle of programming. Having spent many years doing research on formal grammars, I watched these so-called symbolic methods gradually decline in favour of statistical approaches.


Capgemini report shows why AI is the future of cybersecurity

Microsoft will invest $1 billion in OpenAI and work with the San Francisco-based Artificial Intelligence powerhouse to create a computational platform of "unprecedented scale" to accelerate the development of advanced forms of AI. The expanded partnership gives Microsoft and its Azure cloud platform an influential ally in its competition with Google, Amazon and other rivals in the high-stakes race to develop next-generation AI platforms and technologies. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has called out AI as a pivotal area for the future of the company. OpenAI was formed in 2016 by leaders including Elon Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO; and Sam Altman, former president of the Y Combinator startup accelerator. Musk, who has sounded the alarm over the risks of AI, said in May that he was no longer involved inOpenAI.

IIT Mandi trains students on artificial intelligence, machine learning

With a view to addressing the existing need for a sound analytical foundation for Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi is organising a workshop to train students and researchers on the issue. Capitol Watch: New York to take on artificial intelligence

In New York government news, state officials are examining the opportunities -- and risks -- posed by artificial intelligence. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, signed legislation this month that creates a 13-member commission tasked with reviewing the emerging technology and what it will mean for New Yorkers. Meanwhile, the ongoing scourge of opioid abuse is getting some attention with lawmakers announcing a series of public hearings to identify ways the state could do a better job of addressing the problem. While no one is predicting a robot uprising any time soon, state officials say they are concerned by how the rise of artificial intelligence and robotics could affect jobs, the delivery of government services and personal privacy. The New York State Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Automation Commission, approved by lawmakers earlier this year, will also look at how A.I. could be used "in unlawful or unsafe ways."


Robots helping Amazon improve its game in Shakopee

Amazon.com Inc. sold more than 175 million products across the globe during its 48-hour Prime Day sales event a few weeks ago -- more than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined. More than 10 million items qualified for next-day delivery. Making that happen depends on robots. "Speed is the name of the game right now," said Aaron Meyers, senior operations manager at Amazon's four-story fulfillment center in Shakopee, during a recent tour. "The technology allows us to be a lot more safe and efficient, and to get product to our customers much faster."


AI Model Identifies Risk of Mortality from Chest X-Rays

An artificial intelligence (AI) model could help identify patients at an increased risk of long-term mortality based on their chest X-rays, according to the findings of a study published in JAMA Network Open. The convolutional neural network, named CXR-risk, found that 53% of people it identified as very high-risk for future heart attack, lung cancer or death died over 12 years. In comparison, fewer than 4% of those whom CXR-risk identified as very low-risk died over 12 years. The model was developed and trained on data sets from two clinical trials -- Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial (PLCO) and National Lung Cancer Screening Trial (NLST) -- and found that mortality rates for patients with very high-risk scores had an 18- (PLCO) and 15-fold (NLST) higher mortality rate compared to those in the very low-risk category. "This is a new way to extract prognostic information from everyday diagnostic tests," said Michael Lu, M.D., MPH, radiology department at Massachusetts General Hospital.
