DoorGym: A Scalable Door Opening Environment And Baseline Agent

Reinforcement Learning (RL) has brought forth ideas of autonomous robots that can navigate real-world environments with ease, aiding humans in a variety of tasks. RL agents have just begun to make their way out of simulation into the real world. Once in the real world, benchmark tasks often fail to transfer into useful skills. We introduce DoorGym, a simulation environment intended to be the first step to move RL from toy environments towards useful atomic skills that can be composed and extended towards a broader goal. DoorGym is an open-source door simulation framework designed to be highly configurable. We also provide a baseline PPO (Proximal Policy Optimization) and SAC (Soft Actor-Critic)implementation, which achieves a success rate of up to 70% for common tasks in this environment. USS Grunion's bow discovered off the coast of Alaska nearly 80 years after the submarine sunk
Ocean explorers have discovered the bow of the USS Grunion off the coast of Alaska nearly 80 years after it was lost during the Second World War. A team from the Lost 52 Project found the submarine part in 2,700 ft (820m) of water near the Aleutian Islands using pioneering robot technology. The Gato-class submarine, which was carrying 70 people on board when it sank, was last heard from in July 1942. In 2006, the sons of the ship's captain Lieutenant Commander Mannert'Jim' Abele - Bruce, Brad and John - began a search for the lost submarine, finding it a year later. The USS Grunion was a Gato-class submarine that sank during the Second World War.

Being Progressive Shouldn't Mean Being Anti-Algorithm
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, speaking at an event in January 2019 honoring the legacy of Dr. Luther King, said, "Algorithms are still made by human beings, and those algorithms are still pegged to basic human assumptions. And if you don't fix the bias, then you are just automating the bias." Though her comments were correct--algorithms can indeed reflect and exhibit human bias--Rep. Ocasio-Cortez's framing of the intersection of algorithms and fairness highlighted an often-ignored issue in progressive politics. The political movement, defined in part by its commitment to social justice, is unsurprisingly critical of the potential for algorithms, particularly AI, to facilitate discrimination, yet seemingly pays little attention to the ways in which algorithms can actually reduce discrimination.

New article says that to take full advantage of deep-learning solutions in healthcare, the US and China should collaborate, not compete. In a new commentary article, titled'It Takes a Planet', Eric Topol, MD, of Scripps Research and Kai-Fu Li, PhD, CEO of the China-based tech investment firm Sinovation Ventures have argued for more collaboration between China and the US on artificial intelligence (AI) development. This comes in the wake of the US government ordering the AI company iCarbonX in China to divest its majority ownership stake in the Massachusetts-based company PatientsLikeMe. "Chinese academics and companies already have unfettered access to personal health data," they write. "To compete in AI health, US companies will need access to clinical data on a similar scale. How will that be possible if the current isolationist policy continues?"
