Ford CEO Predicts Autonomous Cars And Electric Models

In the future, cars will be electric. People who use them might never own them, but share them instead. The auto industry is going through massive change -- and Tesla and its outspoken CEO, Elon Musk, are seen as the great disruptors. But as Ford CEO Jim Hackett pointed out during a recent interview for CNN Business' The Table with Poppy Harlow in Detroit, his company caused, arguably, the biggest industrial disruption of the entire 20th century. And he's not about to let anyone else take away that legacy.


Facebook uses AI to map Thailand's roads

Facebook has used artificial intelligence (AI) to map 300,000 miles of previously unmapped roads in Thailand and made the results available to the public. The project had been completed in 18 months, less than half the time it would have taken 100 mapping experts to do it manually, Facebook said. The maps could be used for disaster response and urban planning. Many parts of the world remain unmapped. The tool used for the project, Map With AI, is now being made available to all and includes access to AI-generated maps of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda.

When will lifelong learning come of age?

Last month's announcement by Amazon that it plans to spend $700 million (£569 million) over six years to retrain a third of its US workforce was eye-catching for many reasons. One was the price tag: even for the world's second most valuable company, spending three-quarters of a billion dollars over half a decade to retrain 100,000 workers is a huge undertaking. Also noteworthy was the firm's reasoning. Amazon explicitly attributed its move to the rise of automation, machine learning and other technology: the so-called fourth industrial revolution. There was a sense that the pioneer of online retailing, famed for its use of automation, was merely an early accepter of an inescapable truth that all employers will soon have to face: that the skills of their existing workforces will no longer have any market value as their old roles are taken by machines and new roles are created. The company reportedly has 20,000 current vacancies. But, for universities, the most conspicuous aspect of the announcement may well have been their omission from it.

NHS to develop AI lab with £250m funding - Pharmaphorum

The UK government has announced £250m of funding for the NHS to set up a national artificial intelligence (AI) lab to enhance care and research. Announcing the funding, new prime minister Boris Johnson said the lab will work on ways to use AI to improve the detection of diseases and automate admin tasks to free up staff to care for patients, amongst other things. "The NHS is leading the way in harnessing new technology to treat and prevent, from earlier cancer detection to spotting the deadly signs of dementia," Johnson said. Health secretary Matt Hancock added that the NHS was "on the cusp of a huge health tech revolution that could transform patient experience by making the NHS a truly predictive, preventive and personalised health and care service". Earlier this year the Topol Review of the training needs of the future NHS workforce recommended an increase in the number of clinicians trained to use digital, AI and robotics technologies.

Google's artificial intelligence helps protect West Sumatra's rainforests

Non-profit technology startup Rainforest Connection has utilized artificial intelligence to help monitor West Sumatra's rainforests. The tool, named The Guardian, uses Google technology called TensorFlow that can record sounds in the forest and send them to the forest rangers' smartphones through the Rainforest Connection mobile application. Rainforest Connection founder and CEO Topher White explained that the tool was quite simple. "Basically, The Guardian is a box containing a battery, used cellphone, voice recorder and solar panel. To operate this equipment, we put it on top of the trees, which allows them to record voices using its microphone and send it directly to the cloud using TensorFlow," Topher said in a statement.
