The Artificial Intelligence (AI) sector is growing rapidly and is estimated that it will add £630bn to the UK economy alone by 2035. Following the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) report in early 2019, a new report from the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) now identifies the growth in terms of published AI patent applications. This insight provides an overview of the UKIPO findings and considerations for technology businesses in this space. AI is the use of technology to perform tasks that would usually require some intelligence, if done by humans. A patent is a registered intellectual property right, which seeks to create a monopoly over the exploitation of an invention.
Doosan debuts collaborative robot at US trade show
Doosan cobots have a track record in several markets worldwide including Germany, France and China, with capabilities such as a working radius of 900 to 1,700 millimetres and a load capacity of 6 to 15 kilograms. The company gave a demonstration of six cobots collaborating with two human workers to execute fine motor activities on an auto assembly line. The six cobots conducted nine different applications such as inspection, assembly, placement of parts and more, underlining the fact that cobots can be used in almost any production process. During Automate 2019, RG Industries signed a dealership agreement with Doosan Robotics to be their first distributor in the North American market. Through the partnership, Doosan plans to launch its cobots in nine U.S. states including Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, West Virginia, Connecticut, Ohio, Maryland, West Virginia and Delaware.
Artificial Intelligence and the UNDP
I have commented before that the topic of AI Safety should be equally as much about ensuring the field of artificial intelligence is working for important goals such as climate change or reducing inequality. In this regard I find the UNDP strategy of interest. UNDP works to eradicate poverty and reduce inequalities through the sustainable development of nations. This mission is being carried out in more than 170 countries and territories. Quite recently the UNDP launched its digital strategy for 2019–2021.
DEF CON 2019: Researchers Demo Hacking Google Home for RCE
LAS VEGAS – The Tencent Blade Team of researchers demonstrated several ways they have developed to hack and run remote code on Google Home smart speakers. The hacks center around what is known as a Magellan vulnerability, which can be used to exploit the massively popular SQLite database engine. Here at a session at DEF CON on Thursday, the researchers shed light on their work "breaking" Google Home. What made the talk unique wasn't necessarily that Google Home smart speakers could be compromised using Megellan – that was public news in Dec. 2018 – rather it was how the hack was pulled off. On stage Tencent researchers Wenxiang Qian, YuXiang Li and HuiYu Wu laid out the evolution of their research.

It's clear that a lot of action to reduce emissions and climate change will play out in urban areas, where most people in the world live, and an even higher proportion of economic activity happens. Save the city, save the world. But it's hard to make a substantial change to how a city runs. Successful cities are generally already going through continual change. Failing cities generally aren't managing to change to meet new conditions.
This Tesla surveillance hack can tell you if you're being followed
Hacker and security analyst Truman Kain has created a tool that can tell you in real-time if you're being followed while driving your Tesla. The "Surveillance Detection Scout" hack scans license plates and uses facial detection to create an in-depth log of cars your Tesla spots using its Sentry Mode camera software suite. The list can then be accessed by the driver, and each license plate can be labelled as "linked to friend," "high risk," or "usual." The app can even show you the exact route each detected driver took on a map, including video footage. Kain released the source code for the tool this weekend at DefCon, an annual hacker convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. It's not exactly clear who Kain is targeting with the tool.

Artificial intelligence is a topic that evokes many opinions and predictions. I have heard people express concern that AI will take jobs away from humans and an overall fear of the technology. However, I have also heard countless others, including Paul Roetzer, explain how AI will enhance human knowledge and capabilities. After attending Marketing Artificial Intelligence Conference (MAICON) this year, I side with the latter. In July, hundreds of marketers gathered in Cleveland, Ohio at MAICON, to better understand AI and how it will impact them now and in the future.
Enhancing trust in artificial intelligence: Audits and explanations can help
There is a lively debate all over the world regarding AI's perceived "black box" problem. Most profoundly, if a machine can be taught to learn itself, how does it explain its conclusions? This issue comes up most frequently in the context of how to address possible algorithmic bias. One way to address this issue is to mandate a right to a human decision per the General Data Protection Regulation's (GDPR) Article 22. Here in the United States, Senators Wyden and Booker propose in the Algorithmic Accountability Act that companies be compelled to conduct impact assessments. Auditability, explainability, transparency and replicability (reproducibility) are often suggested as means of avoiding bias.
Ola acquihires Bengaluru-based AI startup Pikup.ai
Indian cab aggregator Ola has announced the acquisition of Bengaluru-based artificial intelligence (AI) startup Pikup.ai on Tuesday. As part of the deal, which value was not disclosed, the team at Pikup.ai including founders Inder Singh and Ritwik Saikia will join Ola. "We are looking forward to joining Ola in its mission to build mobility for a billion people and are very excited about building meaningful technology solutions that have a deep impact on the lives of millions, every single day," said Inder Singh, co-founder of Pikup.ai. The acquisition will fuel Ola's plans to develop next-generation mobility technologies such as autonomous driving, electric and connected mobility. The company said it would do that also by setting up an Advanced Technology Centre in San Francisco.
