Nvidia CEO: AI is the single most powerful force of our time
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said AI would drive long-term demand because it is the "single most powerful force of our time." Nvidia reported earnings and revenues that beat analysts' expectations as demand for graphics and artificial intelligence chips picked up in the second fiscal quarter. Huang also said his company's near-term growth will come from gaming and a couple of variants of the company's artificial intelligence chip business: inferencing and AI at the edge. During a conference call with analysts, Huang said artificial intelligence is the "single most powerful force of our time" and that there are more than 4,000 AI startups working with the company -- as compared to 2,000 AI startups in April 2017. In an interview with VentureBeat, Huang said the actual number of AI startups Nvidia is tracking is closer to 4,500.
Russia is about to send a humanoid AI robot to the International Space Station
Russia's space agency Roscosmos is about to send a humanoid robot to the International Space Station. Skybot F-850 will be sent to the ISS on August 22 on board the Soyuz MS-14 spacecraft, and will spend over two weeks there before returning to Earth on September 7. The robot, also known as Fedor, made headlines in 2017 when Dmitry Rogozin, director general of Roscosmos, shared a video of it shooting guns. Shortly after he clarified they "are not creating a Terminator, but artificial intelligence that will be of great practical significance in various fields." Fedor was created to replicate the movement of a remote operator.

Martin Spano is the author of Artificial Intelligence in a Nutshell, a book that explores the mystified subject of artificial intelligence (AI) with simple, non-technical language. Spano's passion for AI began after he watched 2001: A Space Odyssey, but he insists this ever-changing technology is not just the subject for sci-fi novels and movies; artificial intelligence is present in our everyday lives. Alex Krizhevsky was born in Ukraine but lived most of his life in Canada. After finishing his undergraduate studies, he continued as a postgraduate under the supervision of Geoffrey Hinton, legendary computer scientist and cognitive psychologist, one of the foremost advocates of using artificial neural networks for artificial intelligence. Krizhevsky stumbled upon an algorithm by Hinton that used graphics cards instead of processors for its execution.

As one of the world's busiest airports, (ranked No. 3 in 2018 according to Airports Council International's world traffic report), Dubai International Airport is also a leader in using artificial intelligence (AI). In fact, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) leads the Arab world with its adoption of artificial intelligence in other sectors and areas of life and has a government that prioritizes artificial intelligence including an AI strategy and Ministry of Artificial Intelligence with a mandate to invest in technologies and AI tools. The Emirates Ministry of the Interior said that by 2020, immigration officers would no longer be needed in the UAE. They will be replaced by artificial intelligence. The plan is to have people just walk through an AI-powered security system to be scanned without taking off shoes or belts or emptying pockets.

In March 2017, I joined the MathWorks Student Competitions team to focus on supporting university-level robotics competitions. The competition I spend most time with is RoboCup, which is great because RoboCup contains a variety of leagues and skill levels that keeps me sharp with almost everything going on in the field. Today I will talk about my experience in this role, and what it's been like returning to robotics and academia after more than 5 years away from the field. Robotic shorts could help you run and walk more efficiently
Sportswear is getting a robotic upgrade. A new exosuit, which is worn like a pair of bike shorts, makes both walking and running more energy efficient. Philippe Malcolm at the University of Nebraska Omaha in the US and his colleagues developed the flexible suit, which cuts the energy a wearer uses when walking by 9 per cent and the energy spent on running by 4 per cent. This exosuit isn't the first to cut the energy spent moving – others have been able to make either walking or running alone more energy efficient – but Malcolm and his team say it is the first to aid in both. The device could eventually be used by people who spend a long time on their feet, such as rescue workers, firefighters and military personnel.
Metal Wolf Chaos XD review – unreconstructed mad mech trash
In 2004, when Metal Wolf Chaos was first released on the original Xbox, it didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of making it out of Japan. Any sane publisher would have taken one look at this mad B-movie robot game, in which the 47th President of the United States (Michael) dons a mech suit and blows up most of the continent to quash an insurrection led by his former vice-president (Richard), and correctly assessed that it was at best a nonsense curiosity. Now, though, its developer FromSoftware is famous thanks to Dark Souls and we have cheap digital downloads, so this mostly dreadful and yet somehow fascinating relic of a long-dead era of video games has made an unexpected reappearance. Given the merest visual upgrade, it is otherwise an unreconstructed mad robot romp from the mid-oos, with appalling voice acting and overblown, poorly translated cutscenes that truly must be seen to be appreciated in all their awfulness. Lines such as "The fight will continue … as long as the America in my heart is still alive!" are so common that after a while I forgot even to cringe at them.
Scientists detect EIGHT new mysterious radio signals coming from deep space
Scientists have found eight more mysterious repeating radio bursts emanating from deep space, which more than quadruples the known number of signals from earlier this year. The new signals were found by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) radio telescope, and give scientists a much broader data set that they hope may help finally unlock their origin. With the discovery, described in a paper submitted to The Astrophysical Journal Letters, the number of repeating radio bursts signals has climbed to 11. The new signals will aid scientists in their efforts to trace the origin and cause of mysterious radio bursts from deep space. According to Nature, the results of a separate observation from researchers in Australia have yet to be published, but bring the number of findings this month alone to nine total.
