Researchers at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst campus, have built a software tool, called DeepRoof, which they say has achieved a "true positive rate" of 91.1% in identifying a roof's solar power potential, while using widely available (and cheap) satellite data from tools like Google Earth. Their goal in Deep Roof: a Data-Driven Approach For Solar Potential Estimation Using Rooftop Imagery, is to take a list of address (or GPS coordinates) from a contractor and hand back the solar power potential of those sites.


Russia blasts futuristic humanoid robot into orbit to complete 'hazardous' space tasks

Fedor, which is travelling to the orbital outpost aboard the Soyuz MS-14 spacecraft, was created by Russia's Android Technology Company and the Advanced Research Fund on a technical assignment from Moscow's Emergencies Ministry. Its basic goals include transmitting telemetry data, determining parameters related to the flight safety, including overloads, and carrying out experiments to test the Skybot's operations capabilities on spacewalks outside the ISS. A Soyuz-2.1a carrier rocket blasted off from the Gagarin Start launch pad of the Baikonur spaceport in Kazakhstan yesterday delivering the Soyuz MS-14 spacecraft with Fedor into the near-Earth orbit.

Siri and Alexa use #AI too, so we can't easily escape it. Why would we want to? Of course, one concern about the algorithms is that they often are trained on ethnically homogenous datasets, potentially limiting their generalizability to the general population in the United States, and to others around the world. It is quite common for innovations in personalized medicine to be trained and validated in Caucasian populations, with the typical exclusion of minorities.


Huawei Launches Proprietary AI Chipset In Its Ongoing Bid To Reduce Reliance On U.S. Components

Huawei today unveiled in its Shenzhen headquarters a new AI chipset for IoT devices, in yet another move by the company to reduce its reliance on U.S. components. Named the Ascend 910, this chipset comes just two weeks after Huawei pulled back the curtain on its own proprietary operating system, HarmonyOS, which will be used in an upcoming smart TV and soon other smart home products from the company. Almost exactly two years ago Huawei introduced the Kirin 970, the first mobile chipset with a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU), which brought on-device machine learning capabilities to the Mate 10 series of smartphones. Apple and Qualcomm didn't implement a neural engine into their respective mobile chipsets (the A series and Snapdragon series) until a year later. The Ascend 910's A.I. scale is much larger than the Kirin chips' NPU, as it's designed to handle large data networks and in the near future power smart cities and driver-less cars--in China, at least. It is very unlikely western countries will adopt Huawei's A.I. framework anytime soon, given all the recent allegations made by the U.S. government.


UK Government Invests $28m In AI, IoT And High-Tech Farming Projects

The UK Government has invested $28 million in several high-tech farming projects, which are aimed at cutting down pollution, minimizing waste and producing more food. The investment is part of the Government's modern Industrial Strategy, for which the UK has committed to boost R&D spending to 2.4 percent of GDP by 2027. The projects include Warwickshire-based Rootwave, which will use a $875,000 grant to use electricity instead of chemicals to kill weeds from the roots, avoiding damage to crops. Tuberscan, in Lincolnshire, will use $496,000 to develop ground penetrating radar, underground scans and artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor potato crops and identify when they are ready to harvest. The government hopes the technology will increase the usable crop by an estimated 5 to 10%, as well as reducing food waste with minimal additional costs.

IBM Research labs are part of a tradition where large tech companies had extensive research labs. IBM Research, along with the original Bell labs and the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), have developed many innovations. And IBM Research continues that tradition to today. I got to visit IBM's Almaden Research center, nestled in a bucolic part of the south San Jose area, up on a hillside, surrounded with fields of grazing cattle and a thin fog from the Pacific Ocean just over the Santa Cruz mountains. But in that lab a lot of amazing research is underway. This lab is also noted for a critical invention - the Winchester disk drive - that revolutionized storage in mainframe computers, and which eventually scaled down to personal computers.

The movie was directed by Fritz Lang. It shows a grim futuristic society in the city of Metropolis which is inhabited by two distinct classes: the industrialists live off the fat of the land, supported by the workers who live under the city and endure a bare-bones existence of backbreaking work. The story concerns a relationship between Freder (played by Gustav Fröhlich), a young man from the industrialist class, and Maria (Brigitte Helm), an activist who preaches against the divide between the two classes.
