Machine-Learning-Based Prediction Models for AKI
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is a common occurrence for critically ill patients in the ICU, and its early diagnosis has proven to be challenging. The accuracy of the online, machine-learning-based prediction model, AKIpredictor, was analysed for its use in a clinical setting. The study, which took place over five ICUs in Belgium, compared the predictions of AKIpredictor with physician predictions. The patient information for 250 individuals with no prior evidence of AKI or end-stage renal disease before ICU admission was used. Physicians then predicted AKI progression at three stages: at the initial admission, on the patient's first morning in the ICU and 24 hours later.

So, I compared the model with ARIMA and a few interesting findings. Firstly, there doesn't appear to be any seasonal component in the data - when decomposed with statsmodels, the series simply shows a straight line. Also, ARIMA showed a mean percentage error of 23%, whereas for LSTM it was just over 8%. The daily fluctuations in electricity consumption is quite volatile, so it looks like LSTM has an advantage over ARIMA here in that it is accounting for the inherent volatility in the series. While ARIMA would usually need to be combined with a model such as GARCH to estimate this volatility, the inherent nature of LSTM allows it to handle sequential data and in this case it looks like it's handling the volatility quite well.
Using facial recognition technology for hailstorms
Technology similar to what Facebook uses for recommending what friends you should "tag" may soon be coming to hailstorms. David Gagne, a machine learning scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, is using facial recognition technology to unlock the secrets behind big hail. "I'm using artificial intelligence techniques to predict the size of hailstorms," explained Gagne. Working with computer-simulated storms, he created software that is trained to determine which storms produce hail and then to recognize patterns associated with the storms behind the largest hailstones. "The shape of storms is really important."
Huawei unleashes AI chip, touting more compute power than competitors ZDNet
Huawei Technologies has officially unleashed its artificial intelligence (AI) chip Ascend 910, which it says has a maximum power consumption of just 310W--lower than its originally planned specs of 350W. The chip is touted to have "more computing power than any other AI processor", delivering 256 teraflops at half-precision floating point (FP16) and 512 teraflops for integer precision calculations. The Chinese tech giant also announced the commercial availability of its MindSpore AI computing framework, which it said was designed to ease the development of AI applications and improve the efficiencies of such tools. Huawei said the AI framework handled only gradient and model data that already had been processed, so user privacy could be maintained. The platform also had "built-in protection technology" to keep AI models secured.

Docking of unmanned Soyuz spacecraft carrying Russia's first humanoid robot to ISS is aborted
MOSCOW – In a new setback for Moscow, an unmanned spacecraft carrying Russia's first humanoid robot to be sent into orbit failed to dock automatically at the International Space Station on Saturday. "Russian cosmonauts issued a command to abort the automated approach of an uncrewed Russian Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station," the U.S. space agency NASA said in a statement. "The craft was unable to lock onto its target at the station," and "backed a safe distance away from the orbital complex while the Russian flight controllers assess the next steps," NASA said. Russian flight controllers had told the ISS crew it appeared the problem that prevented automated docking was in the station and not the Soyuz spacecraft, NASA added. Moscow news agencies quoted the flight center control as saying the Soyuz craft had to retreat to a "secure distance" from the ISS.
