Contract cheating may have met its match in Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

The influence of artificial intelligence (AI) can be felt across every aspect of life, and higher education is no exception. AI is making education increasingly accessible and easier for students with disabilities, providing support for those who need additional help. But it can also help universities uphold academic honesty policies. Georgia Tech University in the US has developed "an AI agent" named Jack Watson to pose as a contractor and help the university identify students guilty of contract cheating. Contract cheating is a serious academic dishonesty that involves students getting an external party to contribute to or complete their assignments or assessments.

The Italian artificial intelligence strategy under consultation

#artificialintelligence

The Italian strategy on artificial intelligence is now subject to a consultation proceeding to fine-tune its contents and finalize the actions to be taken. In April 2018, the European Commission published a proposal for a European strategy for AI in a communication entitled "Artificial Intelligence for Europe". Based on the strategy outlined above, the European Commission issued a Coordinated Plan on Artificial Intelligence, launching a European Artificial Intelligence Alliance and setting up an expert group on AI. The latter has the goal of defining the ethical guidelines and investment policies for artificial intelligence in Europe. An essential step required by the above-mentioned Coordinated Plan on Artificial Intelligence is that each EU Member State develops national AI strategies, outlining investment levels and implementation measures.

Bengal plans on sensor-based technology to curb elephant deaths

#artificialintelligence

Kolkata, Aug 26: The West Bengal Forest Department is exploring the possibility of a sensor-based technology to track the various sounds made by elephants to track their exact location. The move is a significant stride towards mitigating the problem of elephant deaths on railway tracks in north Bengal. This will be the first time in the country that such a technology will be used, said a senior official of the Forest Department. He said that the high-frequency sounds made by an elephant are audible but they also make low-frequency sounds that are inaudible to the human ear; this is where the technology will help. The technology will use artificial intelligence to recognise such sound within a fixed radius.

How AI could unlock super-fast broadband speeds

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) was centre stage at the World Economic Forum in China. At least 20 of the 56 companies selected for the organisation's Technology Pioneers programme are using AI in some way with applications ranging from autonomous vehicles to advertising technology. A branch of AI, machine learning, is dedicated to the ability of a machine to learn something without having to be programmed for that specific thing. It enables computers to improve their performance automatically over time by being fed data and information in the form of observations and real-world interactions – like a toddler learning about the world around them. Answering whether the animal in a photo is a cat or a dog, spotting obstacles in front of a self-driving car, spam mail detection, and speech recognition of a YouTube video to generate captions are just a few examples out of a plethora of predictive machine learning models.

Devolution? Keio University team designs wearable robotic tail to help elderly keep their balance

The Japan Times

Millions of years after the ancestors of humans evolved to lose their tails, researchers at Keio University have built a robotic one they say could help unsteady elderly people keep their balance. Dubbed Arque, the gray 1-meter device mimics tails that cheetahs and other animals use to keep their balance while running and climbing, the Keio team says. "The tail keeps balance like a pendulum," said Junichi Nabeshima, a graduate student and researcher at the university's Embodied Media Project, demonstrating the robotic device attached to his waist with a harness. "When humans tilt their body one way, the tail moves in the opposite direction." As Japan grays, it is leading the industrial world in seeking ways to keep its aging population mobile and productive.

The robots are coming for your job, too

#artificialintelligence

Long the prediction of futurists and philosophers, the lived reality of technology replacing human work has been a constant feature since the cotton gin, the assembly line and, more recently, the computer. What is very much up for debate in the imaginations of economists and Hollywood producers is whether the future will look like "The Terminator," with self-aware Schwarzenegger bots on the hunt, or "The Jetsons," with obedient robo-maids leaving us humans very little work and plenty of time for leisure and family. The most chilling future in film may be that in Disney's "Wall-E," where people are all too fat to stand, too busy staring at screens to talk to each other and too distracted to realize that the machines have taken over. We're deep into what-ifs with those representations, but the conversation about robots and work is increasingly paired with the debate over how to address growing income inequality -- a key issue in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary. How should Americans deal with it?

The AI Skills Crisis And How To Close The Gap

#artificialintelligence

Now that nearly every company is considering how artificial intelligence (AI) applications can positively impact their businesses, they are on the hunt for professionals to help them make their vision a reality. According to research done by Glassdoor, data scientists have the No. 1 job in the United States. The survey looked at salary, job satisfaction and the number of job openings. If you have recent experience looking for AI specialists to join your team, it's quite clear that we're facing an AI skills crisis. In order to move AI projects from ideation into implementation, companies will need to determine how to close the AI skills gap so they have experts on their team to get the job done.
