IBM gives artificial intelligence computing at MIT a lift

IBM designed Summit, the fastest supercomputer on Earth, to run the calculation-intensive models that power modern artificial intelligence (AI). Now MIT is about to get a slice. IBM pledged earlier this year to donate an $11.6 million computer cluster to MIT modeled after the architecture of Summit, the supercomputer it built at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy. The donated cluster is expected to come online this fall when the MIT Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing opens its doors, allowing researchers to run more elaborate AI models to tackle a range of problems, from developing a better hearing aid to designing a longer-lived lithium-ion battery. "We're excited to see a range of AI projects at MIT get a computing boost, and we can't wait to see what magic awaits," says John E. Kelly III, executive vice president of IBM, who announced the gift in February at MIT's launch celebration of the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing.


The future of women at work: Transitions in the age of automation

The age of automation, and on the near horizon, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies offer new job opportunities and avenues for economic advancement, but women face new challenges overlaid on long-established ones. Between 40 million and 160 million women globally may need to transition between occupations by 2030, often into higher-skilled roles. To weather this disruption, women (and men) need to be skilled, mobile, and tech-savvy, but women face pervasive barriers on each, and will need targeted support to move forward in the world of work. A new McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) report, The future of women at work: Transitions in the age of automation (PDF–2MB), finds that if women make these transitions, they could be on the path to more productive, better-paid work. If they cannot, they could face a growing wage gap or be left further behind when progress toward gender parity in work is already slow. This new research explores potential patterns in "jobs lost" (jobs displaced by automation), "jobs gained" (job creation driven by economic growth, investment, demographic changes, and technological innovation), and "jobs changed" (jobs whose activities and skill requirements change from partial automation) for women by exploring several scenarios of how automation adoption and job creation trends could play out by 2030 for men and women given current gender patterns in the global workforce. These scenarios are not meant to predict the future; rather, they serve as a tool to understand a range of possible outcomes and identify interventions needed.

People who call companies to ask questions about their cable bills or complain about their Internet service being out are increasingly talking to artificial intelligence. Natural language processing, a subset of A.I. that helps computers understand speech, has become good enough that it's being used to listen and respond to basic customer questions. Over the past year, Google, Amazon and business software firm Twilio have all ramped up their marketing of A.I.-powered software for call centers. Their sales pitch is that the technology can answer basic customer questions, leaving more complicated questions and complaints to human agents. UK's Health Secretary has announced a massive £250 million investment in Artificial Intelligence which will help the NHS system tap into the power of AI. The European superpower is setting up a National AI Lab to make this happen. The Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: "The experts tell us that because of our NHS and our tech talent, the UK could be the world leader in these advances in healthcare, so I'm determined to give the NHS the chance to be the world leader in saving lives through artificial intelligence and genomics." The NHS Long Term Plan had earlier pledged to use AI to help clinicians eliminate various variations in care. This investment will augment the pledge.
