It's no secret that our cybersecurity industry today suffers from a yawning talent gap -- a statistical juggernauton track to reach 3.5 million unfilled positions by 2021. As the wakeup call spreads, we're seeing more cross-disciplinary trainingsand nurture efforts deep into the educational pipeline -- from pre-K, elementaryand middle schoolinitiatives, to programs for high schooland higher education. We just got fresh momentum from the recent White House "Executive Order on America's Cybersecurity Workforce," which proclaims our collective cybersecurity talent pool "a strategic asset that protects the American people" and in need of "work-based learning, apprenticeships, and blended learning approaches…for both new workforce entrants and those who are advanced in their careers." As a cybersecurity education evangelist, this proclamation is at once music to my ears and the mother of all to-do lists. That's because the Executive Order focuses primarily on the Why and What -- meaning it's largely up to the industry to keep figuring out the How.
Artificial Intelligence, Authentic Impact: How Educational AI is Making the Grade
Adoption of artificial intelligence is on the rise: According to research firm Gartner, 37 percent of organizations have now "implemented AI in some form," and adoption is up 270 percent over the past four years. Schools are following suit: Technavio's "Artificial Intelligence Market in the US Education Sector 2018-2022" report predicts a nearly 48 percent growth rate for AI tools over the next three years. As noted by MIT Technology Review, the rapid development and uptake of AI solutions has created an environment where companies may "obfuscate and oversell" AI abilities even as organizations race to implement new solutions and keep up with the competition. The key to AI success is specificity. It is crucial to define key needs AI tools can meet and shortcomings it can address.
Artificial intelligence helps banana growers protect the world's most favorite fruit
A new smartphone tool developed for banana farmers scans plants for signs of five major diseases and one common pest. In testing in Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Benin, China, and Uganda, the tool provided a 90 percent successful detection rate. This work is a step towards creating a satellite-powered, globally connected network to control disease and pest outbreaks, say the researchers who developed the technology. The findings were published this week in the journal Plant Methods. "Farmers around the world struggle to defend their crops from pests and diseases," said Michael Selvaraj, the lead author, who developed the tool with colleagues from Bioversity International in Africa.
Russian humanoid robot Fedor boards space station after delay
MOSCOW – It was second time lucky on Tuesday as an unmanned spacecraft carrying Russia's first humanoid robot docked at the International Space Station following a failed attempt over the weekend. Am ready to carry on with work," the robot's Twitter account said in a jokey first tweet from space. Copying human movements and designed to help with high-risk tasks, the life-size robot, Fedor, is due to stay on the ISS until Sept. 7. Speaking to Russian cosmonauts on the ISS via a video link-up, President Vladimir Putin lavished praise on them for the way they handled the glitch. The problems with docking were "in some way abnormal," he said, adding that "as usual for our cosmonauts, you dealt with this work magnificently. The robot sat in the commander's seat of an unmanned Soyuz spaceship that blasted off Thursday from a Russian spaceport in southern Kazakhstan.

Via a VC prime contract, VC and Deep Labs have previously partnered to conceive, develop and implement a successful artificial intelligence pilot for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Center for Program Integrity (CPI) department utilizing deep visioning and learning techniques and tools for CMS's Medicare Part D program, which covers prescriptions for over 39 million beneficiaries. This pilot was designed to discover potentially fraudulent activity before it occurs related to Excluded Providers (EP) to help reduce and minimize the "pay-and-chase path of recovery of funds" and to enhance CMS's ability to proactively identify and investigate potential fraud.

Machine learning increases resolution of eye imaging technology
The results appear in a paper published online on August 19 in the journal Nature Photonics. "An historic issue with OCT is that the depth resolution is typically several times better than the lateral resolution," said Joseph Izatt, the Michael J. Fitzpatrick Professor of Engineering at Duke. "If the layers of imaged tissues happen to be horizontal, then they're well defined in the scan. But to extend the full power of OCT for live imaging of tissues throughout the body, a method for overcoming the tradeoff between lateral resolution and depth of imaging was needed." OCT is an imaging technology analogous to ultrasound that uses light rather than soundwaves. A probe shoots a beam of light into a tissue and, based on the delays of the light waves as they bounce back, determines the boundaries of the features within.
