U.S. Patent and Trademark Office wants your opinion on AI inventions
The U.S. Department of Commerce's Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is asking for the help of experts and the broader public to determine the impact AI will have on intellectual property and "whether new forms of intellectual property protection are needed." A call for public comment was published in the Federal Registrar by the USPTO today in search of answers about such issues as how AI is reshaping perceptions of inventions or whether additional information should be required to claim a deep learning system as an invention since they can have a large number of hidden layers and weights that evolve. To help solicit responses, the notice in the federal registrar comes along with a series of questions such as "what is an AI invention and what does it contain?" "What are the different ways that a natural person can contribute to conception of an AI invention and be eligible to be a named inventor? Structuring data in order to train a model?
Shanghai hosts 2019 World Artificial Intelligence Conference to boost innovation - Xinhua
The 2019 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) is being held in China's economic hub Shanghai from Thursday to Saturday in a bid to boost AI cooperation and innovation globally. With the theme of "Intelligent Connectivity, Infinite Possibilities," this year's event will focus on AI-enabled high-quality development to cope with the common problems in human development and to create a better life for mankind. Two summit forums are scheduled to be held on Thursday, where governors, representatives from international organizations, leading scientists and entrepreneurs discuss the development of the AI industry and the frontier of science to seek high-quality development, application and governance. Over 50 percent of those guest speakers on the forums are from overseas. Twelve themed forums will also be held covering topics such as education, intelligent algorithm, chip and smart hardware, unmanned driving and 5G AI.

Apple apologises for allowing workers to listen to Siri recordings
Apple has apologised for allowing contractors to listen to voice recordings of Siri users in order to grade them. The company made the announcement after it completed a review of the grading programme, which had been triggered by a Guardian report revealing its existence. According to multiple former graders, accidental activations were regularly sent for review, having recorded confidential information, illegal acts, and even Siri users having sex. "As a result of our review, we realise we have not been fully living up to our high ideals, and for that we apologise," Apple said in an unsigned statement posted to its website. "As we previously announced, we halted the Siri grading program. We plan to resume later this fall when software updates are released to our users."

Decision Point AI are working with the Paisley YMCA, Scotland on a secure application that standardises both the SHANARRI social framework processes and its data. SHANARRI is an acronym for the eight wellbeing indicators in the Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) in Health and Wellbeing. It stands for Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible, Included. The indicators are used to structure the information recorded about a child or young person and to monitor their progress across social services. During this first phase of the YMCA initiative the meta data provided by the new application will produce indicators of potential risk and establish an integrated view of each child and young person.

For this reason, it announced a billion-dollar partnership with Microsoft to fund its work. This hints that AGI research is leaving the field of science fiction and entering the territory of serious research. "We believe that the creation of AGI will be the most important tech development in human history, with the potential to chaneg and shape the trajectory of humanity," Greg Brockman, chief technology officer (CTO) of OpenAI, informed the press.
