The German government is pursuing the development of medical uses of AI. At a panel discussion held in conjunction with the country's Science Year 2019 (Wissenschaftsjahr 2019) Germany's Minister of Education and Research, Anja Karliczek, and a group of experts spoke about how to lay the groundwork to optimize the use of AI in healthcare. The panel first addressed the broad range of opportunities for applying AI in medicine. These ranged from diagnosis to analyzing and classifying enormous amounts of patient data to aid doctors and healthcare staff alike. One example they cited was a German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) and Heidelberg University Hospital project that has shown AI is effective in analyzing images to identify the most deadly type of skin cancer, malignant melanoma.

The number of companies using artificial intelligence in healthcare has increased from less than 20 in 2012 to 100 last year, according to GlobalData Healthcare estimates. Growth is expected to accelerate with the AI healthcare market set to reach $6.6bn by 2021, a 40 percent growth from its current size, research from Accenture shows. The three most cost-saving uses of AI in healthcare are robot assisted surgery, virtual nursing assistants, and administrative workflow assistance, Accenture has found. Although healthcare AI is widely used in the US, take up has been slower in the UK though healthcare apps are gaining traction. Babylon is an AI app which uses speech recognition to check symptoms and connect patients with doctors while MedyMatch helps A&E departments make better decisions under extreme pressure.

Elon Musk and Jack Ma disagree about AI's threat

Alibaba's Jack Ma and Tesla's Elon Musk took opposing views of the risks and potential rewards of artificial intelligence at an event in Shanghai. The Chinese entrepreneur said he was "quite optimistic" about AI and thought it was nothing for "street smart" people like them to be scared of. "I don't know man, that's like famous last words," responded Tesla's chief. Mr Musk added that technology was evolving faster than our ability to understand it. The two did, however, agree on one topic: that one of the biggest problems the world is facing is population collapse.


Japan to train drone specialists for disaster response

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency will train firefighters to operate drones in an attempt to promote the use of drone technology in disaster response efforts. The agency will offer firefighters from across the country a training course from the second half of fiscal 2019, awarding those who have completed the course the role of "drone operation adviser." It plans to train a total of 135 personnel by fiscal 2023, and dispatch them as instructors to fire departments that have yet to introduce drone technology. Drones are anticipated to play a key role in reaching places that cannot be reached by firefighters and helicopters. For example, a drone fitted with a thermographic camera can identify sources of fire and give a clearer picture of the damage in large-scale fires. In landslide disasters, drones can be used to search for missing people.

As a second-year PhD student at the University of Toronto, Justin Boutilier spent four weeks in Dhaka, Bangladesh, investigating ways to curb ambulance response times in the bustling capital of a developing country. He quickly got a firsthand look at the scope of the challenge: The roughly 10-mile trip from his hotel to meetings in the city took about three hours. "You could walk faster," he says, "but there's no sidewalk, so it's kind of dangerous." Boutilier, who has joined the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as an assistant professor, uses optimization and machine learning to improve healthcare access, delivery and quality, particularly in low- and middle-income settings.
