For all their differences, big tech companies agree on where we're heading: into a future dominated by smart machines. WIRED worked with Montreal startup Element AI to estimate the diversity of leading machine learning researchers, and found that only 12 percent were women. That estimate came from tallying the numbers of men and women who had contributed work at three top machine learning conferences in 2017.

SHARI, HOKKAIDO – The Japanese unit of Sweden's AB Volvo on Thursday demonstrated before journalists a highly autonomous truck at a sugar factory in Hokkaido, where it moved for about 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) without the involvement of a human driver. UD Trucks Corp. said the test, which began in early August, is the first level 4 experiment using a large truck in Japan. A level 4 vehicle -- a notch below being completely autonomous -- can perform all driving tasks without a driver, even in emergencies, in designated areas and routes. The truck maker has teamed up with Nippon Express Co., one of the country's major logistics firms, and the Hokuren Federation of Agricultural Cooperatives to conduct the test as part of efforts to address a severe driver shortage in the graying country. At the test site, the autonomous truck ran the distance, including about 200 meters on a public road around the factory, at a speed of 20 kph (12 mph).

In July, Neuralink unveiled tiny brain "threads" in a chip which is long lasting, usable at home and has the potential to replace cumbersome devices currently used as brain-machine interfaces.

"AI will open a new chapter so that humans will know themselves better," said Jack Ma, Alibaba Group Holding founder. "Most of the projections about AI are wrong … people who are street-smart about AI are not scared by it." The conference has attracted executives from nearly 300 companies including US firms Intel, IBM, Microsoft and Qualcomm as well as scientists and scholars from across the world. Both men had to condense their visions of the future into a compact 45-minute session, which also included answering a series of pre-prepared questions from Chinese netizens.
