The two biggest barriers to the use of machine learning (both classical machine learning and deep learning) are skills and computing resources. You can solve the second problem by throwing money at it, either for the purchase of accelerated hardware (such as computers with high-end GPUs) or for the rental of compute resources in the cloud (such as instances with attached GPUs, TPUs, and FPGAs). On the other hand, solving the skills problem is harder. Data scientists often command hefty salaries and may still be hard to recruit. Google was able to train many of its employees on its own TensorFlow framework, but most companies barely have people skilled enough to build machine learning and deep learning models themselves, much less teach others how.

An unsupervised machine learning study presented at the 2019 meeting of Association for Computational Linguistics--which examined 3.5M books published between 1900 and 2008--indicates that men are described based on their behavior, where women are described based on appearance. In specific, words like "beautiful" and "sexy" are two of the adjectives most frequently used to describe women, while common descriptors for men were "brave," "rational," and "righteous." The books, which amounted to approximately 11B words in sum, included a mix of fiction and non-fiction. "We are clearly able to see that the words used for women refer much more to their appearances than the words used to describe men," said University of Copenhagen computer scientist and assistant professor Isabelle Augenstein in a statement. "Thus, we have been able to confirm a widespread perception, only now at a statistical level."

Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma thinks that artificial intelligence (A.I.) will allow humans to work 12-hour workweeks. Ma made that statement while sharing a stage with Tesla CEO Elon Musk at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai. "I think people should work three days a week, four hours a day," Ma said, adding: "I think that because of artificial intelligence, people will have more time to enjoy being human beings. I don't think we'll need a lot of jobs." Musk, who helped co-found OpenAI, a semi-non-profit dedicated to mitigating any existential risk from A.I., also offered that computers will surpass humans "in every single way" (per CNBC).
