In the debate over artificial intelligence, whose side is Elon Musk on? Musk, who's in charge of SpaceX, Tesla and the Neuralink brain interface venture, sized up the odds with Alibaba founder Jack Ma today during a widely watched one-on-one session at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai. The way Musk sees it, the prospects aren't great for humans if future AI agents decide to go rogue.

Artificial intelligence is turning the "Enhance!" Vishal Patel at John Hopkins University in the US and his colleagues have developed an AI that can automatically deblur photographs of people's faces. The technology could eventually be used to improve facial recognition on long-distance surveillance images, such as those taken from a drone, says Patel.

Domino's Pizza Enterprises built a proof-of-concept using machine learning to personalise vouchers and deals for customers in Australia. The master franchise, which operates in nine countries, is an early tester of an AWS service called Personalize, which was only made publicly available last month. Speaking at the recent AWS Summit in Sydney, Domino's lead data scientist Thomas Atkins said the pizza maker wanted to find a way to scale its ability to personalise deals using a wider array of "variants", such as time of day, pickup or delivery, price, and type of pizza. "Making communication via SMS and all our marketing channels personalised is a real challenge because of scale," Atkins said. "To get from segmented marketing to personalised marketing requires a really deep level of automation. "With the typical level of automation that we have, we can do campaigns with four to six variants relatively easily, but there are a number of manual steps that make this a little bit cumbersome.

An electrocardiogram, also known as an ECG or EKG, is a painless, simple test that records the electrical activity of a person's heart. A recent paper in the journal Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology, describes how the team developed an artificial intelligence (AI) tool to predict sex and estimate age from ECG data. The researchers, from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, in Rochester, MN, trained the AI tool, which is of a type known as a convolutional neural network (CNN), using ECG readouts from nearly 500,000 individuals. When they tested the CNN's accuracy on a further 275,000 people, they found that it was very good at predicting sex but less good at predicting age. The AI tool got the sex right 90% of the time but only got the age right 72% of the time.

The almighty dollar is a powerful factor in the current wave of artificial intelligence (AI) adoption. And why shouldn't it be? A study by Cornell University researchers and the Crisis Text Line crisis-counselor platform described how volunteer crisis counselors' use of language evolves. The team used state-of-the-art natural language processing to learn that the language employed by counselors systematically changes, based on their training and empathy for callers in distress, giving rise to unique voices for calming those distressed individuals. The researchers analyzed more than 1 million anonymized texts from about 3,500 counselors on the Crisis Text Line. Crisis Text Line's Robert Filbin said the study' insights will help the platform train and guide crisis counselors. Cornell's Cristian Danescu-Niculescu-Mizil said, "This is an example of how natural language processing techniques can assist the development of skills in conversation-heavy professions."
