India will soon become the first country to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in the tax assessment process, as the Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has promised to adopt faceless assessment system from October this year. According to official sources, the government is very particular about the deadline of the implementation. In this regard, the revenue secretary Ajay Bhushan Panday on last Saturday held a meeting of officials of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) and various tax agencies. The government has set the deadline of October 8, for the implementation of AI and ML for the assessment purposes. Now data in the income tax return, statement of financial transactions and from other sources will be analysed as per the pre-defined risk criteria.

Zenuity, a joint venture between Volvo and Autoliv, today said it plans to work with European Organization for Nuclear Research (aka CERN) to speed machine learning for autonomous vehicles. Based near Geneva, Switzerland, CERN works with scientists from 23 EU member states and is best known as maker of the Hadron Particle Collider, a 16-mile underground loop that pushes subatomic particles close to the speed of light. Zenuity said it's working with CERN to address big-data challenges introduced by autonomous vehicles. Cars that compute quickly can reach decisions faster and potentially avoid accidents. "Addressing these issues is crucial for the development of safe autonomous driving (AD) cars and is a key part of Zenuity's long-term ambition to speed up the development of vehicles that will completely eliminate car collisions and associated injuries and fatalities," a Zenuity blog post said.

Jack Ma says that with the help of artificial intelligence people should learn to work only 12 hours a week. It may be possible to work only 3 days a week and 4 hours a day through advanced technology and improvement in education system. Ma said so at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference held in Shanghai on Thursday. Earlier in April, Ma supported work for 12 hours every day and 6 days a week. He had said that those thinking of working for 8 hours are not needed.

The scammers and thieves who continually target the travel industry and cause billions of dollars every year in fraud have met a powerful new foe--machine-learning algorithms that are catching up to their best moves. The $8.2-trillion travel-and-hospitality business is especially vulnerable to multiple forms of fraud. Thieves with stolen credit cards can buy tickets online or with mobile devices. Because these tickets are intangible and perishable, blocking the fakes is a race against time. In 2018, travel and tourism was the third-most targeted industry by cybercriminals, after finance and retail, an IntSights study found.

On the day I met Sebastian Thrun in Palo Alto, the State of California legalized self-driving cars. Gov. Jerry Brown arrived at the Google campus in one of the company's computer-controlled Priuses to sign the bill into law. "California is a big deal," said Thrun, the founder of Google's autonomous-car program, "because it tends to be hard to legislate here." He said it with typical understatement. An idea that was in its technological infancy a decade ago, when Thrun and his colleagues were racing to develop a vehicle that could drive itself more than a few miles on a desert test course, was now being officially sanctioned by the country's most populous state.

When Lei Wang became a data annotator two years ago her job was fairly simple: Identifying people's gender in images. But since then Wang has noticed increasing complexity in the tasks she is assigned: from labeling gender to labeling age, from framing 2D objects to 3D bounding boxes, from daylight images to late night and foggy scenes, and the list goes on. Wang is 25 years old. She used to be a receptionist, but when her company shut down in 2017 an algorithm engineer friend suggested she explore a new career path in data annotation -- the essential process of labeling data to make it usable for artificial intelligence systems, particularly those using supervised machine learning. Being out of a job, she decided to give it a try.

Launched by IQ Holding, the centre provides full back-end solutions using the latest in robotics, AI and software platforms to support the supply chain and logistics industry. The robotic technologies used at the centre help process 12,000 robotic orders daily, delivering a 99.9 percent accuracy rate, and three times the human output, a statement said. It added that the key features are robotic picking, end to end track & trace, intelligence storage, package protection, gift wrapping and seasonal packing. IQ Fulfillment said it supports the needs of small and medium enterprises, incubators, accelerators and e-commerce players, enabling them to accelerate their business growth.
