PrTransH: Embedding Probabilistic Medical Knowledge from Real World EMR Data

This paper proposes an algorithm named as PrTransH to learn embedding vectors from real world EMR data based medical knowledge. The unique challenge in embedding medical knowledge graph from real world EMR data is that the uncertainty of knowledge triplets blurs the border between "correct triplet" and "wrong triplet", changing the fundamental assumption of many existing algorithms. To address the challenge, some enhancements are made to existing TransH algorithm, including: 1) involve probability of medical knowledge triplet into training objective; 2) replace the margin-based ranking loss with unified loss calculation considering both valid and corrupted triplets; 3) augment training data set with medical background knowledge. Verifications on real world EMR data based medical knowledge graph prove that PrTransH outperforms TransH in link prediction task. To the best of our survey, this paper is the first one to learn and verify knowledge embedding on probabilistic knowledge graphs.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) represent a direct communication link between the brain and an external device. Recent experimental results show how electroencephalographic (EEG) signals, recorded from consumer-grade BCI devices, can be used to extract private information about a user. With sufficient computational power, this information can be exploited by others to make inferences about our memory, intentions, conscious and unconscious interests, as well as about our emotional reactions. Privacy and security issues arising from the misuse of BCI devices is an important issue that deserves immediate attention and careful consideration. This project focuses on making improvements to privacy and security properties of BCI-enabled technologies.

Today, even as we celebrate avoiding such an extreme outcome for 22 years and counting, we're continually scanning the field for new developments in the world of AI. That would require AI technologies with broad reasoning abilities, sometimes called third-wave AI, which are highly unlikely in the foreseeable future.


ASX approaching artificial intelligence with caution ZDNet

While the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) makes a global name for itself by implementing one of the only real use cases for distributed ledger technology (DLT) in its blockchain-based CHESS replacement project, its CIO Dan Chesterman has detailed a handful of other tech-related initiatives the "large regulated fintech" is also undertaking. Speaking with ZDNet at VMworld in San Francisco last week, Chesterman said his organisation is looking into the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), highlighting that in the ASX's context, there are a lot of examples where machines are making quite clever decisions. "The main exploration we've been doing of artificial intelligence in that AI/ML space has been in market announcements ... it's not in production, it's something we're doing as a proof of concept," he said. "And what we've come to the conclusion of is that we certainly see, in that sort of context, there is actually a serious consequence for any error." Market announcements, for example, is one element of the business where Chesterman said AI could both help, but also cause legal dilemmas.
